Don't go for the name (Buyers Guide: MiniDiscs)

When buying a minidisc you should always ignore the name on the front, don't just buy a Sony because it's a Sony.

PORTABLE OR NOT

Get a portable recorder if you are going to use it outside the house and if you have not got a huge budget. Otherwise get a home deck or if you are loaded get a home deck and a portable player.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR

Look for one you like to look at, one that is small/lightweight or like me, the one with the best sound and the best battery life. The JVC700 is the best at the minute with 74 hours playback and the best sound. It comes at a price (£250 and is pretty big). This is the first MDLP portable (can store 320 minutes on an 80 min disc). It's recordable and has a really good remote. The Panasonic..200 is the best alternative for size/weight. The best player is the AiwaHX50 at £120 from Rich Sounds and the best deck is the Sony JB-940. It really is the best!

WHERE TO BUY

Buy it in Richer Sounds if they have it in stock or good old Dixons if they don't. Always check the net but Richer Sounds is very cheap. Dixons offer a extended warranty and this is good for MD portables, trust me.

WHAT TO GET

You need an optical out on your hi-fi for the best recording, if not don't buy a MD buy a new Hi-Fi. You will want a 3.5mm to 3.5mm to record from tapes, PC's and TV's.

IMPORTING

Some web sites let you import portable MD's but remember tax. It is good as you can get MD's that are currently unavailable here. I am getting my mate to get me one when he goes to Singapore, it will be very cheap, hehe.

The most important thing is to look after your MD player and get MDLP as it doesn’t degrade the sound as much as rubbish cables (Analogue). Also battery life and size is key.
