Retire Sol - Nobody wants you!

I'm a Notts County and have had the displeasure of watching this deluded over the hill player at our club this season.

When he first signed for us, my first reaction was why do we need a player of his calibre to get us out of League 2? Yes we needed to strengthen the defence, but there was no need to get a player of Campbell's ability.

Oh how I was proven wrong. I went to watch Sol's famour only appearance for us at Morecambe and his lack of fitness and general desire was embarrassing. You may think this review is being written out of sour grapes now he has left but I implore anybody who believes this to please watch the video of his performance at Morecambe - it was shocking!

It was pretty obvious after that game that he didn;t have the stomach to get himself fit and play at this level so he walked out after signing a 5 year contract. If he thinks he has the ability to still get in the England squad for the World Cup he is seriously deluded and the lack of offers he has had since leaving signifies his fall from grace.

To still have £40k a week pay demands is pure greed on his part and he should just try and salvage any dignity he may have left and just retire

was very good, is now just good

Arsenal and England international defender sol campbell, born in 1974, made his debut at tottenham in 1992. four years later his strong powerful and pacey performances got him his england debut.

in 2001 Campbell made the switch from tottenham to arch rivals arsenal during which time he became a crucial part of wengers winning team throught several leagues and cups.

recently as he gets older he has been superseeded by john terry and rio ferdinand. a series of injuries and personal problems kept him out of much of arsenals historic champions league campaign - tho he still popped up to score for arsenal in the final.

for england his experiance and strength at the back provides cover for our central defenders.

There is no way Sol Campbell should be in the England team. Its not that he is a poor defender but he just does not want to win, a problem that is now indicative of the whole side. He is a greedy w*anker who does not care about football just money. He left a club which he had supported and held together for nine years to go to Arsenal. Anywhere else an it could be put down to ambition and the Tottenham fans woul still have loved him but to go to the scum, on a free transfer that he forced Alan Sugar to give him does not just take the piss but it shows that he could not give a damn about the fans just himself. It shows that he is greedy and selfish, he can play in a side that is doing well but when the sh*t hits the fan he does not care. It is so important that the England team have people who WANT to win, thats what winning is all about and Sol just has not got this passion in him. Apart from probably making him the nastiest man in football it makes him a poor playr who should be an outcast in English football. Yes, i'm a Gooner. And i was made up right from the off when we signed young Sulzeer, because despite the fact he'd spent his last few years languishing away as the best thing in a mediocre side ( you know who i'm talking about..! ;-} ), he obviously had a lot more to give. Remember that it was Arsene Wenger who brought a finesse to Tony Adams game that hadn't been there previously, and he even extended that great man's career by a few crucial years. We've seen Wenger's magic start to work on Sol too. Once he settled in - and it was always going to take a while - he's become the reliable heart of Arsenal's defence. And no-one can deny that his passing and distribution have improved... okay, so there have been the odd "long-ball" incidents, but he is certainly a more complete footballer than when he left White Hart Lane. To those who claim that Rio Ferdinand is the real talent in the England defence, can i just point out that while Rio is a defender of flair, any great defence needs to pair such a player with a more solid, straightforward partner, and that's the role Sol filled so admirably during the World Cup. Only, because his style of play relies less on fancy turns and backheels, it's easier to overlook his contribution, but he had as much if not more to play in England's best defensive performances than Ferdinand. My one gripe would be that the area Campbell now need's to concentrate on is simply this: his shouting! Arsenal's defence misses the extremely vocal contributions of an Adams or a Keown right now, and if Sol could become less internalised at times, marshalling his comrades in defence and staying in charge of Arsenal's penalty area. And at precisely £0 transfer fee, what more can you ask for?!

Sol Campbell played for Tottenham Hotspur for roughly 10 years, which he played well throughout his time with Spurs. At Spurs he made a great impact and slowly but surely became a great football player and then he decided he wanted to enhance his career further by joining Tottenham’s rivals Arsenal. I feel that his move to Arsenal will enhance his career because lets face it Arsenal are a better side then Tottenham and have better players that Sol can learn more off. I feel he is a World class player and can only get better. He has a lot of talent and has so far used it to his own advantage. Sol Campbell has a lot of pace and hardly any strikers will beat him in a race. He has a lot of power to beat opponents in the air as well as in a chase for the ball. He has quite a good vision for his own team mates because he seems to pick them out with a lot of long balls and it rarely misses his target. Sol looks comfortable on the ball and bringing it out of defence and he generally looks confident when over strikers are hassling for the ball. Overall he is a top class player and I feel he will go to the World cup and shine because of his great talent.

Sol Campbell is said by many to be a world-class football player. I think he is a great player, but I’m not sure whether I think he is world class or not. He has got most of the things you need to be a great defender, but he is the type of person who sometimes makes mistakes that lead to goals scored by the opposition. Sol Campbell is quite fast, which is always good in a defender because it gives them more of a chance when strikers such as Michael Owen come running towards you with the ball. Campbell is strong and so he is able to use his strength to give him a better chance of winning a ball from the opposition, especially if they are light. Sol Campbell is a great tackler and this is something that all defenders need to be, otherwise there is no point in them being defenders. Campbell is also a good passer of the ball, which is something else defenders should be otherwise they are likely to in the ball off the opposition, and then give it straight away again. Sol Campbell joined Arsenal in the summer on a free transfer, from their rivals Tottenham. This was one of the most shocking transfers ever in football, because Campbell was rated as Tottenham’s’ best player and then he goes and joins their rivals. One way, I don’t blame Campbell for leaving Tottenham because they haven’t exactly been winning much over the past 10 years and so Campbell joined a team that he thought can win trophies. But then again, Campbell could have joined a team like Liverpool, who are also capable of winning trophies. Campbell is a regular member of the England squad and he seems to forming a good partnership with Leeds United’s defender, Rio Ferdinand. They both played well in England’s win at Germany, but they have to watch what they are doing sometimes, because it was their fault that England conceded a goal against Germany. It has also been said that Sven is thinking of partnering Southgate with Ferdinand, which wou
ld be a mistake in my opinion because Campbell is better than Southgate. Anyway, Campbell is only about 26 and so he still has quite a few years to go and to prove that he is one of the best defenders in the world.

Sol Campbell – what can I say about him that hasn’t already been said a dozen times? The story that dominated the back pages of newspapers in the countdown to the start of the 2001/02 Premiership season was the shocking transfer of Tottenham Hotspur’s best player to bitter rivals Arsenal. Sol was apparently offered mega-money deals elsewhere around Europe but chose to stay in the Premiership and attempt to win trophies with Arsenal, who have a much better chance than Spurs ever will in my opinion. Campbell is a centre-back and has won many England caps already and established himself in the international side with several different managers. Despite only being only 25, Sol is one of the older members of the fantastic young England side. Both at international level and now club level Campbell is seen as a replacement for Tony Adams, in his last season at Arsenal, has been at the heart of the Arsenal and England defence throughout his career, captaining both sides. Whilst Vieira looks set to fill Adams’ boots as the next Arsenal captain, Campbell looks like the perfect player to take on that famous Number 6 Shirt next season. Campbell is currently out with a small injury, but from what we have seen so far this season he is more than capable of coping at club and international level to combat some of the best strikers in the world. Campbell can dominate the defence and keep top strikers completely out of the game. A strong powerful defender, he has won a place in the Arsenal side, keeping Martin Keown on the bench (although right now both Campbell and Adams are injured). Sol should be more than capable of replacing Tony Adams and may even be an even greater player than Adams has been at Arsenal for so many years. Let’s just hope the Spurs fans calm down about the whole matter so that he can concentrate on his game 100%.

                  Disadvantages

Sol Campbell has basically admitted to himself just how good he is by opting for Arsenal. The reason he moved from left-back to central defender for Spurs was because he does not possess enough ability on the ball. If it wasn't for his size, power and pace then he would not be half decent but as a pure footballer he sadly lacks in the skill department. Playing at the back in Barcelona, Inter or wherever in Europe he would have been expected to bring the ball forward out of defence and his ability would have been cruelly exposed. So what's he done? He's bottled the big 'World class' move abroad and settled into the comfort zone with the Gunners in a league where he knows he won't be found out. He's made for life with the money he's going to make but he's totally bottled the opportunity to prove to people just how good they think he is, but HE knows deep down and has copped out. Proving to me what was already obvious, Sol old son you aint a world class footballer, maybe a world class destroyer, because it's easier to destroy than create. So you can continue destroying those Premiership strikers knowing that your creative weaknesses will barely be needed.

What is wrong with the small minded Spurs fans who are sending death threats and hanging doll's because Sol Campbell has decided to move to another club. I know that there is a lot of hatred between Arsenal and Spurs but why terrorise a player because he wants a change or feels he's going nowhere where he is. I mean Spurs have not achieved anything for years and still look very mediocer should he really be expected to miss out on the rest of his career just to stay with spurs. I think the main reason he is leaving is the(private) talks he was supposed to be having with the board did not remain quite and this he saw as disloyalty and dishonesty on the part of the board. Campball did make comments that give fans the right to be upset when only a few weeks ago he said"my bond with spurs fans would never be broken" It clearly has but that does not excuse the threats and hanging effiages. Grow up and learn to live with it nothings going to change and your just showing what idiots english supporters can be and we do not need that publised at the moment we are trying to leave that tag behind. The Tottenham supporters club need to stop this stupidity now and appeal to all fans for calm as it has got way out of han d. I would like to add that i'm not a Arsenal fan so this is not a biased opinion.

                      • "He has joined the scum"

So, the man himself, the rock at the back, the only thing holding our team together for the past few years has done the unthinkable- he has become a gooner, joined arsenal. I feel like i have been stabbed in the back by a best friend, i feel like someone has trod on my testicles- and jumped up and down repeatedly. I feel cheated. Out of the clubs he could have joined- Man U, Liverpool, Chelsea, Barca, Inter and Bayern Munchen- he chose Arsenal. Claiming that the move wasnt about money. Sol, if it wasnt about money, why did u ask for £135,000 pounds a week, plus a clause in your contract letting you leave if we didnt qualify for the champs league within 2 years. Ladies and Gentleman, Sol Campbell is, as Alf from Home and Away would say, is a great big gready 'gallaw' (wotever that means!!) That sort of money (135grand) is a joke, we offered him £85grand and he wouldnt accept. Not even the big boys- barcelona would accept his demands- he was even more rude to them- asking for flights home to london 2 or 3 times a week and asking Barcelona to foot the bills!!! Now Sol said that he felt bitter and cheated towards the fact that spurs told the press his demands. This also is a joke- spurs had to do this or it would have looked like spurs lacked ambition or they were being tight if the figures had not been released in the way they were. If anyone should feel cheated and bitter it should be spurs and their loyal fans. We could have got £18 million for him 18 months ago- selling him to man poo. (man U) so why didnt he go then??? Spurs, along with everybody else thought that he would stay, he should have stayed because this is the beginning of an exciting new era for spurs fans. Faith healers or no faith healers. In his defence, in recent years spurs have not been good enough. We should be in europe we should be in the top 6. We are a club that has had such greats as Greavsie, Lineker, Gascoigne and Hoddle pl
ay for us, not to mention Justin Edinburgh and Ronny Rosenthal (where r u now?) Sol served spurs well over 10 years, he didnt earn a fortune compared to other players at other clubs yet, it is as if he has wiped all his loyalty away by donning the red and white of the gooners. I just hope that David Buchler (Enic exec dude) is right- c u in the champions league sol. see you there. deal with it.

                        Disadvantages

                        • Greed

So, after month’s of speculation, one of the world’s top defenders has left his mediocre mid-table side to sign for a club with real ambitions of European success. So if Lilian Thuram can leave Parma for Juventus, it’s a shame the more modestly talented Sol Campbell can’t see beyond a transfer to Arsenal. For months now Campbell has been harping on about his desire to win things (and not just to pocket a small fortune). He claimed he was leaving Spurs because he felt it was time that he started playing at the top level, not merely the big fish in a small pond as he found himself at Spurs. Arsenal at the moment are not a club that appear capable of challenging for major honours. Campbell is kidding himself if he thinks that they have a realistic chance of success with their current squad, and maybe he should have paid a little more attention to those persistent rumours that suggest that Arsene Wenger will be leaving for pastures new in a year’s time. Patrick Vieira’s recent public outburst over Arsenal’s lack of progress seems to have been completely missed by Campbell. Vieira is a more accomplished player than Campbell can ever dream of becoming. Of course, all this would only really matter if Campbell had indeed joined Arsenal with the aim of winning things. The more realistic reason is the pots of money offered to him. His refusal to sign a new deal at Spurs, when he publicly castigated the club for their unwillingness to pay him what he thought he was worth suggested that money was the be all and end all in his decisions. The figures being bandied about recently in terms of Campbell’s wages would have you believe that he is one of the world’s best defenders, after the going rate. But is he really that special? There are many better defenders around than Sol. Desailly and Stam in the Premiership show just how far he is from being truly world class. His main attribu
te is his sheer strength, but nowadays world class defenders need more to their game than simply the ability to outmuscle opposing strikers. His distribution is not the best, and although he does have the characteristics of a leader, he leads through his strength rather than by his skill on the ball. Perhaps he knows that by signing for Spurs arch enemies, he will avoid the attention he would attract as England’s “star” export. Instead he has managed to upset the Spurs faithful, and doubtless won’t be welcomed back to White Hart Lane with any warmth. The only small consolation for Spurs fans will be seeing Campbell continue to underachieve with their North London rivals. If he had really wanted to test himself as a player, he would have joined a club with a real chance of winning things, not a team who appear to be on the downward slide.

Im sick of this guy. "Oh my loyalty is to Spurs, Im not in it for money only football ps can I have £130,000 a week" What a waste of a talent as he will become another money grabber. I predict he will go to Barcelona, then a place like Madrid then Milan before ending up a post 30 year old at Chelsea. He will gain a massive signing on fee at each club, as well as vast wages and each time the leaving of the club will be acrimonious. Not that he is a bad player, I adore Campbell as a defender and if his attitude was right I'd love him at Man U alongside Jaap Stam. As a defender he is pure class but his character and intentions now leave a lot to be desired. Campbell has, admittedly, given a great deal to Spurs, but surely the decent thing to do would be to tell them he was going so they could a) make some cash by selling him rather than using the Bosman to get a signing on fee and b) so they could look for a ready made replacement with the cash. Sol Campbell may be a class defender, but he is not a moral man. His treatment of the club that made him has been a disgrace, I hope he flops massively where-ever he goes (even if its United)
