Capital punishment is topical issue which will always have relavence. I feel inclined to agree with the use of the death penalty, but and i must stress this, only in the most extreme and serious cases. The average cost of detaing a prisoner in a uk jail for 1 years is roughlt £25,700. Which I'm sure most tax payers would agree is to much to pay for what is a blight on society, especially when there is approxamiatley 82,000 people in prison in the UK, now that equates to the taxpayer paying over £2 million pounds to keep prisoners. The sentece for murder is usually about 16 years, so thats over £200,000 for one murderer.

However there are major issues in the arguement against capital punishment is, what gives you the right to take a life?.
Is there enough need for execution? Do murders still have a right to life? Well i believe that when a person unlawfully takes another perosns life they forgoe their own right to life, the ultimate deterrant for crime is death. A large percent of those who commit crime are likely to reoffend within 3 years, howvere with captial punishment there is no chance of that. As i have said the only time i would condone capital punishment is in extreme cases and where there is irrifutable evidnece, and this irrifutable evidence can usually be found in the cases on serial criminality.

In general i think there may be a place in todays society for capital punishment and before condemming my writing on an ethical basis, consider my points.

Summary: Consider it.

Collingwood, i agree which is why in my review I said execution is only a last resort which is done when there is irrifutable evidence.

I think one of the major arguments surrounding the use of capital punishment is whether or not it deters others from commiting crimes. Evidence from the US seems to suggest it does not. And while it might prevent reffending as you suggest, what happens if you execute someone who turns out to be innocent? It is quite a dilemma. The thing I really disagree with, though, is the way that some prisoners are kept on death row for years - that is wrong.
