Making us as bad as them? (Capital punishment)

I have never lived within a society when capital punishment has been used and i thank god for that!! I hope i never will have to either!

I have to say although i can see both sides of the arguement i have and will always disagree with capital punishment no matter what arguement anyone puts forward to me.

Let me tell you why:

1 - As i believe, most people who are/were sentenced using capital punishment were more often than not done so due to murder or equally serious crimes. So those people that (in todays modern society) push the injection into the arm of that person or strap them into the electric chair - what does that make them? Yes yes i know it is there job, but in my eyes that makes them and the organisers as equally bad as them.
We are suppposed to be teaching these people a lesson which yes is done by taking their lives but it is also saying to them that it is acceptable to take someones life.

2 - What about those who are wrongly convicted? Those people who live in a society whereby capital punishment still takes place are continuously told that no one will ever be sentenced to death unless they can be 100% sure they were guilty. Yet we only have to look at the rates of pardons taking place to know that there are too many mistakes taking place.
How anyone can live with themselves knowing they have wrongly sentenced someone to death is beyond me - i certainly wouldnt want that on my shoulders!

3 - Finally there is the factor of the family. It is hard enough for family knowing their loved ones will spend the rest of their lives in jail, but knowing that they will never see them again due to captial punishment. We are supposed to be punishing the convict, not the family.

Having said all this, i do think there are still problems within out criminal justice system - the greatest problem i see is that of prisons. People are sent their as a punishement! Yet more increasingly we are seeing prisoners with television sets in their cells, pool tables for leisure time and unlimited family visits.
Unfortunatly this seems to be due to human rights campaigns, prison is not supposed to be a walk in the park - its punishment, its not supposed to be easy!!

So to conclude in my opinion - no we should not being back capital punishment!
