Advantages: one less piece of trash in the world.
Disadvantages: What about those who really are innocent?
I admit that when an awful crime is committed, I feel inside like I'd love to do some pretty awful things to the person who did it in the first place. That's just human nature and I won't be the first or last. But when I think rationally I believe we shouldn't have capital punishment. If anything happened to somebody close to you would you really get any peace within if they are given the chair or hung? Where is the peace in knowing that they are being freed from the crime they have committed through death. Would you feel inner peace once they have been executed, only to find that they were in fact innocent. It happens, and then I believe you will be the one carrying the guilt of that persons life throughout the rest of yours. If we didn't have such a ridiculous justice system then people wouldn't want capital punishment. Please don't lecture me about prisons being overcramped. For god's sake release the 85 year old who didn't pay her council tax, and the thousands of others who are getting longer sentences than those who commit serious crimes. Prison should be kept for serious offenders and maybe those who are constant re-offenders. Community service should be passed to those who aren't a risk to others. On top of this prisons should be toughened up and made into more of a punishment than a holiday camp. If a person committed a crime against one of my own then I can honestly say I would rather their life be taken away through being stuck in prison until the day they died. I wouldn't want them to have the easy way out.

- 08/01/01 I'm still undecided on capital punishment, but I agree with you that if the council tax protestors and similar 'criminals' were released and given alternative punishments, hundreds or thousands of prison cells could be freed up for murderes, rapists and 'serious' criminals. |
