Advantages: might stop some people

Disadvantages: you'll never get total agreement on this issue

Every time a child is killed or an old person murdered the outcry is always 'bring back the death penalty'.

Now the question is, is it right or wrong?

Some might say yes, giving these examples as reasons: they won't do it again, an eye for an eye, it might deter others from committing such awful crimes.

Others will say no, giving these examples: what happens if you get the wrong person, some religious people say it's wrong, it doesn't put people off, you only have to look at the USA to see this.

Well I personally think that they should only bring it back for those cases that are proven without a shadow of doubt or for those who admit it.

Other answers for these crimes are life (meaning life), but for me the answer is bring back the birch. At least then if it's used on someone and they're later found out to be innocent then at least compensation can be awarded.

On the whole something needs to be sorted to try and stop the murderers, child molesters and rapists.

Looking back, there's always been bad un's and at my school there were canings every other day! There were 400 pupils at my school but it was always the same 20ish kids that were chastised in this way. So, this obviously means there were around 380 kids who were never in the hall waiting to be whacked by the only teacher (deputy head) authorised to administer it. The biggest problem with the debate over the years to abolish it was the way it was reported in the press. One would think that there were monsters dishing out thrashings willy nilly. The truth at my school was that I never knew anyone that when caned didn't deserve it. Those who on the radio programmes etc debating the subject and who were against it, using phrases like "anyone who canes my child etc". Well excuse me was your child a little 'b' or what? The same bunch complaining today that society is in decline, what with stabbings, our old folk being beaten almost to death in their own homes for next to nothing being robbed from them, girls falling about drunk and being sick on the streets every weekend? Bring back some power to the teachers and the police, courts and parents and hope it's not too late. The nice teenagers of this country must be seething with rage at their siblings destroying public trust in our young! Sorry for the rant, it's been bubbling for years....

I think capital punishment and coporal punishment are rather different. "Bring back the birch" surely refers to coporal punishment, ie you hit people with a birch stick.
