Capital punishment –
Good points +

· A rather barbaric point. Less murderers alive, smaller prison population.
· Makes the family of whoever is killed feel better.
· We now have better technology, so they should be fairly sure that the person killed committed the crime.
· If somebody kills someone they have taken away the thing greatest to that person – their ability to live, their life. Surely they should receive the same or worse punishment as what the person they killed received.

Bad points –
· So very occasionally the wrong person could be killed.
· Who’s going to want to be the person to order the execution?


They are the basic good and bad points. Until I saw the film “The Green Mile” I believed far more strongly that capital punishment should be brought back. Now I don’t feel as strongly. I think that murderers should either be killed or get LIFE in jail and not just 12 years.

I think that the death penalty should be reinstated for murder, rape, child abuse and treason. I think that crime would significantly drop in these areas if the death penalty was reinstated. The death penalty is still in place however for people who kill or attempt to kill the Queen or Prime Minister. Whether the death penalty would be taken out if that happened no one knows.

Despite all this the death penalty will very unlikely be reinstated because the United Kingdom is in the Geneva human rights act which bars capital punishment.
