I've been meaning to add my opinions to this long list of reviews on such a controversial topic! There's nothing I like more than to have a good old debate, so let me start by causing one... Firstly, I would like to stress that I think capital punishment is wrong. I don't believe that any person has the right to take the life of another under any given circumstances, no matter what they have done. This seems to be done mainly in the States these days and that is why I find it to be particularly hypocritical. The 'country of freedom' and of 'human rights', this is supposed to be an up-to-date, modern country and it wants to be known for this, yet it is still practicing this method of punishment which most country's discovered was wrong years and years ago! What is even more hypocritical about capital punishment in America is that their President- Goerge Bush- causes and administrates the deaths of thousands of innocent people every day in countries such as Afganistan, merely to boost his own status and popularity in his own country. (I must ry not to get onto the subject of war in this review- don't worry, that will come soon!) So, here we have serial killers, paedophiles and rapists and all sorts of nasty people who have committed the worst crimes imaginable up on death row, yet no one dares to think that the person who administrates all of this is actually just as bad himself, yet we don't see him on death row! In fact, we see him as one of the most popular and powerful men in America- it's an outrage! I'm not saying we should put Bush on death row (although a lot of non-American people would). What I am saying is that nobody should be put on death row. This is not just because of the hypocrisy of it all- that was just one mere point; the simple fact is that it is not right to take a life. If it was right to kill, none of these offenders would be on death row in the first
place. But what if these criminals are a danger to society? Well, a lot of people are dangers to society these days- it's a sad, but well known, fact. That doesn't mean we should go around killing them all, or that would make us dangers to society as well! So what should we do with people such as paedophiles and murderers? High security! Killing these people is just an easy way out because people don't think they can make secure enough units. I'm sure if we can build whole cities and invent machines that can take us to the moon, then we can make high security units for these parasites to be kept in. Technology is so advanced these days that there are so many ways in which you could ensure someone is kept in one place. We don't kill here in the UK, so what makes America think they have the right to do it over there? Maybe they have more dangerous people over there? Well maybe that's because evil people generate from an evil society? Just a thought... Anyway, death is an easy way out for these criminals. They commit murders and would be faced with sentences of anything between about 10 and 60 years behind bars. Some of them will die in prison and never see freedom again. Others will spend half of their lives in there and eventually come out to a society that hates them. If this is not a terrifying prospect, then what is? I think these people would jump at the chance for their lives to be ended if this is what they would have ahead of them. So in a way, death is just letting them off the hook. Surely it would be better for these twisted criminals to face their fate and take proper punishment for what they have done? Being kept in prison and being a public enemy is a much more justifiable punishment than ending life when it gets too hard. If these people are such a danger to the public, then don't let them out of prison! If someone murdered a person close to you, wouldn't
you rather see them live the rest of their lives as pure hell, rather than be excused from the suffering they would face in this lifetime and move on to whatever meets us after death? I know I would rather see them rot away in jail where they will pay the ultimate price for what they have done. As for all this nonsense about offenders being sent away on holidays- I think that is nonsense as well. There is no doubt that there are some prisons where being admitted is just like getting free accommodation and free meals, they are even allowed to play games and do degrees in there! I knew one idiot who committed GBH by stabbing someone in the arm and only got put away for three months (he also beat up his girlfriend and his own elderly mother on a few occasions which was brought up in court). Three months?! What lesson can you learn in three measly months? And what else did he do while he was in there? He got a job! He was actually paid to do some of the labour that prisoners have to do! And this is no joke! This story absolutely outraged me and it is stories such as these that sway people over to thinking that capital punishment should be used on some criminals. But that is not the answer. The answer is that the government need to get their act together with the prison systems and make sure that when someone goes to prison , they are not going on holiday, they are being locked up for some unacceptable crime that they have committed and are there to be tought a lesson in order for them to understand that what they did was wrong. So the basic answer is not to lower ourselves to the levels of these criminals and just go for the kill, but to show them serious punishment so that they will be so traumatised that they will not even think about doing it again (and some won't be given the chance, of course, because they will be behind bars until they shrivel up and die) Best place for them, I'd say.

- 06/09/02 I would agree with amy below:
When there is no doubt as to the guilt of a person, and when they have committed suitably awful crimes and show no remorse, I would much prefer my taxes to go on, say, 12 feet of rope or a 5 minute burst of 250,000 volts than 20 years of bed and board... |

- 20/08/02 Thanks for all the comments- we all have different opinions! But my point about disagreeing with them getting paid to work in there coinsides with the point that some criminals seem to be offered a better life inside than they can get outside- it doesn't seem right.
Disturbed One- thanks for the mention on your home page :)

- 20/08/02 I agree with you on the issue of capital punishment, but I disagree with you on the idea of prisoners getting paid to work. While the person you use as an example is certainly not one I have any sympathy for, we really need to rehabilitate prisoners if possible. Too many people are locked up/killed without any thought at all. |
