Advantages: Can pick up cheap items, gets a bit of fresh air!
Disadvantages: More and more bulk selling, Ebays taking a lot of the trade =[
Growing up, every sunday meant the same old thing. Get up a little later than usual, have a breakfast, a bit more greasier than usual, then get in the car with my mum and dad and go to a new carboot sale!
I loved this as a kid. A shop is great and everything, but when I was young, a car boot sale was a shop on a table, but only the best bits, followed by another, and another, and another! The amount of toys I could see was unbelievable! As I'd trek through the muddy and clotted up field, I'd pull my mum over to any action figures, action men or lego I could see. One toy here, £1, a box of lego here, £3. Compared to a shop price, it was perfect! I was young, and with the family not having too much money I could get so much with so little!
As the days went on however, I noticed while less and less was being sold, the prices were going up and up. Until the age I am at now, I notice how a lot of stools seem more like shops. None of its second hand that people dont want, its cheaply bought items in bulk trying to be sold back on! I dont want that! Especially when a lot are charging shop prices.
I cant help but feel that car boot sales in my local area have just gone down hill over the years. I also cant help but think that its mainly down to one thing. Ebay!
With Ebay, it seems like more and more people are flogging their unwanted goods online! To be fair, its like having a carboot for 7 days long, which you dont have to stand there all day and can have hundreds of thousands of people viewing. its the ideal situation compared to the cold sunday mornings. I know its what I'd personally prefer.
I have stopped going to them more and more since as the standards just seem to have dropped. Hopefully one day, theyll be back to the way they were! Or maybe its just the places I'm going to? Who knows!
Summary: As much as I loved them, theyre just not the same anymore!

- 23/05/09 I have only ever done them for the selling noy the buying, but it is harder to make any decent money these days. (and entrance fees can be high) |
