Advantages: keeps you fit, introduces you to new friends
Disadvantages: None?
I recently wrote an article on the fun there is to be had from dancing (in general). I firmly believe there is no better way to shift pounds, make friends and have an utterly boptastic night out. Not all that many people have heard about Ceroc - but it has actually been a growing dance scene in london and country-wide for a good few years now. Although I love all kinds of dance - I consider Ceroc to be my all time favourite. If you like the idea of meeting loads of new people with a guaranteed dance partner for each class (no strings) this is the dance for you. The music is usually chart stuff but with a few swinging classics thrown in for good measure. The dance moves revolve around hand gestures (polite ones) and arm movements. Feet are free to do there own thing (within reason)- so two left feet are welcome. The man leads on all moves so the girl only needs to get the knack for following a signal and spinning on the spot. Nearly all the moves involve the girl spinning - so too much alcohol can lead to your twirling right off the dance floor and into the street (oh yes, and I should know). It's best to start with the old dutch courage (if you need it) then top up with water all night. You get high on the atmosphere and the adrenaline - so most regulars know to stick to soft drinks. A few advanced moves send the girl into orbit (rock and roll style) so a good pair of shoes and your best undies are also a bonus. The evening lasts about three hours including two classes of around 45 minutes and the rest is practice time and freestyle. This is when you get to see the real pro's strut there funky stuff and bring the roof down. You must arrive early to catch the beginners section. Never expect to 'just pick it up' - If you miss the class you won't have a clue. Venue-wise, check out some ceroc websites for ones near you. I'm a fan of Fulham Broadway myself but everyone has there own preference depending on
the crowd and the personality of the teachers. Last but by no means least, a rather querky addition to all classes are the 'taxi' dancers - guys and girls dressed in black and white that act as additional tutors. The idea behind this is that in your first few weeks you can simply hail a taxi to brush up on your moves between classes. That's all there is to it, so what are you waiting for? TAXI! TAXI!
