Spanish 27 year old Carlos Checa rides for the Yamaha Marlboro team for the 500cc Championship in 2000. His eventful, if not chequered, career seems to be firmly on the up at the moment as he lies at time of writing (July 2000) second in the riders championship. Not only is he in with a real chance of winning the World Championship this year, he holds the role as leading Spaniard in the class which to a bike racing mad country as Spain brings with it its own accolades and pressures.
