Advantages: Heal the world
Disadvantages: If you don't it'll be too late
At last... movement with the Kyoto Treaty, but what a surprise without the help of the US and others. Hopefully this will be the two-fingers from the rest of the world that will spur "George Dubya" into action... but don't hold your breath. I won't get started on Mr. Bush and his administration that's another opinion entirely and I'm not blinkered enough to know that the blame for global environmental issues can be laid soley at the feet of the States but... This is an issue we needed to sort out YEARS ago. All this constant finger pointing from: "It was our ancestors fault, coal and older vehicles caused much more damage than we do now." to "If America halves it's pollutants we're ok." It's all time wasting. Politicians getting together every six months and "making progress" usually means they 'promise to do something soon'. Not good enough. I'm sure a few people will shrug this opinion off with "another enviro-loony" with thick glasses and even thicker wooly jumpers... not so, just someone who cares. We ALL need to do our bit. Cycle to work, walk more often, recycle your rubbish, when you do drive make sure your tyres are at the right pressure, use unleaded fuel and a catalytic convertor, don't leave the tap running when you do your hair, teeth etc. turn your thermostat down ONE degree... ALL these things are things we can ALL do, NOW. No, they're not going to reverse global warming overnight but it'll help. Politicians do nothing about Environmental issues because they think we (the electorate) don't care and they're right! It looks like we don't. Write to your MP, do some or all of the things above, make this an important issue. If you can't be bothered ask yourself this. If it was physically possible... could you look your great-grandchild
ren in the eye and say "you'd tried" if you don't?

- 24/07/01 Some very good points about change needing to come from within, however the only reason the politiians talk about it is that it's what gets them elected - the point being we need to have some kind of faith in them. |
