Clinical trials ... medicines and treatment procedures. In a trial of medicines, a group of patients or individuals is divided up into 2 sub-groups and one sub-group is given the new medicine, the other a 'placebo' which generally does not contain the pharmaceutical of interest. In the case of 'treatment procedures', there may be an existing surgical technique and a newer approach. The patients would be divided into 2 groups, one receiving the new treatment, the other the new treatment. In each of these scenarios, the choosing of 'who gets what' is done 'blind', so that there can be no 'selection' of who receives/does not receive the new medicine/treatment. At the end of the trial, the results are reviewed and the effectiveness or other wise of the new medicine/treatment assessed. A problem has been that patients have often not been given sufficient information, and many have not known that they were being involved in a clinical trial.

After a week, they confirmed all was ok with me and I haven't got any horrible diseases and they said they would put me on their database and contact me when something came available. About a month later, a trial for ibuprofen came up, which ... more

When people hear that I have participated in clinical trials, they look at me like I'm crazy and often ask why I risk my health. Well, to be perfectly honest, I do it for the money. I first heard about clinical trials when at university and thought I would give it a go and sign up to a research clinic. I had to go for a screening, which involved medical-usual things like, height, weight, ECG, blood sample etc. I then went in to see the Doctor, who went through my complete medical history and I had an exam done. After a week, they confirmed all was ok with me and I haven't got any horrible diseases and they said they would put me on their database and contact ...  Read the complete review

Clinical Trials are trials which are carried forth by doctors and experimentalists, in order to test the effect of medicines or drugs which are still in the "testing" stages and have not been brought to the market yet. Individuals usually either volunteer or sign up to participate in medical / clinical trials, and usually get paid for their time and to take part. There are many different types of trials that take place, each often consisting of different tests. There has been alot of speculation and negative comments in the past about clinical trials, but I have had many friends whom have done them before, and got paid to do so, and ...  Read the complete review

---->Drug Trials<---- I took part in a drug trial of the "not yet available" Nifedipine, in the June of '07. The drug is for people who have high blood pressure due to Kidney problems, it is a common misconception that the heart is the regulator of blood pressure, it is, infact, the kidneys. I was one of 100 people taking part in the trials who could because, (A). I suffer kidney disease. (B). I hope one day, like Cancer, this type of disease will be curable. (C). I have a daughter who, I want to grow old with and be there for when she needs me. ---->What's Involved?<---- The trial involved ...  Read the complete review

I know that the subject of clinical trials is always a bit of a taboo but I am all for them but that said not sure if I would ever take part in one myself. This review is quite long so if you just want my opinion, skip to the bottom to conclusion. I am a scientist at heart and studied biological subjects at university. Throughout my studies I learned exactly what clinical trials were, why they happen and also why we would be taking steps back in the medical field by stopping them? --------------------- First what is a clinical trial? Well a clinical trial is scientific research that gives us information about a particular ...  Read the complete review

This is my understanding of clinical trials. I have had to research this, as I am about to use clinical trials in my studies. This is an amalgamation of my findings, which I hope is a good outline for understanding. A clinical trial (also clinical research) is a research study in human volunteers to answer specific health questions. Carefully conducted clinical trials are the fastest and safest way to find treatments that work in people and ways to improve health. Interventional trials determine whether experimental treatments or new ways of using known therapies are safe and effective under controlled environments. Observational trials address health issues in ...  Read the complete review
