Advantages: very skillful talented winger/attacking midfielder, great to watch
Disadvantages: maybe lacks defensive qualities but has improved
Joe Cole is one of the most exciting and talented football players in the English game and certainly one of the most creative and skillful English players of his generation. He is currently out with a serious knee injury and is expected to return to the Chelsea team at the start of the 2009-10 season.
Cole was born on the 8th of November 1981 in Paddington, London and moved to Camden at the age of six. He is a product of the famed West Ham academy and whilst there even at a young age was touted as the next big thing in English football. He made his first team debut at the age of 17 in 1999 for West Ham. He also went on to win the Fa Youth cup that season with the Hammers youth team alongside Michael Carrick (winning 9-0 on aggregate v Coventry City in the final. In January 2003, then manager Glen Roeder gave Cole the captains armband at the age of 21 but sadly for him and the club they were relegated even though he was voted the clubs player of the year.
He moved to Chelsea in the summer of 2003 for £6.6 M . Due to the stiff competition for places at the club, he initially struggled to hold down a place in the team for both England and Chelsea under Claudio Ranieri.
After being criticised by manager Jose Mourinho after scoring a winning goal against Liverpool in 2005 for his lack of defensive play for the team, Cole responded well and became a key part of Chelsea's run to their first league title for 50 years. He scored some key goals and was named in the Pfa's team of the season.
Cole was again an important part of the team that secured back to back premier league titles in the 05/06 season scoring a goal against Manchester United at home to seal the title with a 3-0 win.
He was involved in Chelsea's FA cup win in 2007 starting the game and being substituted at half time.
In the 07-08 season he was voted Chelsea fans player of the year after a number of eye catching performances during the season
The 08-09 season started well for Joe scoring the opening goal of the Scolari era in a 4-0 win against Portsmouth. In a game against Southend in the Fa cup in January, Joe injured his knee with a cruciate injury and was ruled out for the rest of the season.
Cole has made over 50 appearances for the English national team scoring 10 goals.
I really like watching Joe Cole play. He is one of the players that is good to watch as he is skillful and is not afraid to take players on and get a cross or shot in on goal. When he started off one of his main problems was his tracking back and defensive qualities as a winger. This has improved over the years and he has become a more complete player. When given a good run in the team with competition for places as well he is quite a consistent performer. He has been unlucky with injury this season which has hampered his progress but am hopeful he will return next season fresher and better!
Summary: he's here ,he's there hes every where, Joey Cole!

- 25/05/09 As a Chelsea fan myself I'm naturally biased in his favour, but I regret to say I don't think he's quite as brilliant as he's sometimes cracked up to be. But I hope I'm wrong, and he comes good next season on return from injury. |
