Advantages: Fighting for our rights
Disadvantages: we may lose
So many people have been unfairly dismissed and taken their bosses to a tribunal, are they abusing the system? What would you do if you were off sick for a long time due to an illness or injury received from your working environment, then dismissed whilst you were off. Would you feel angry and feel that it was unfair? Would you fight for compensation because you were out of work because of no fault of your own? Where is the line drawn? When does the general public stop thinking you are screwing the system? I'm sure we would all feel diffently if we were in the situation ourselves. It's so easy to read an article in the paper and condemn someone for screwing the system and think they are only out for what they can get. Yes a few may behave that way, but many don't! Some have to be pushed to fight their corner! Many people have been disabled due to an injury at work but are too afraid to be ridiculed by their colleagues for trying to claim what they are entitled to. Some people are out of work for a very long time and really struggling to make ends meet. They may work for a company that continually abuses their staff, whether it be by working conditions or lack of support when they need it most. Yes, there are many who jump on the band wagon and try to screw the system for everything that they can, but that bad apple spoils the whole bunch! I can quote one incidence when a lady had fallen up a flight of stairs and severly injured her hand. Unfortunately she was badly advised by the union rep and was never given the opportunity t claim for this injury. 4 years on, her injury has resulted in 4 operations to replace damaged joints and tendons. 4 years of painkillers and drugs and the final result is heading towards an amputation. She will never be able to work in her 'normal' working environment again, so surely with only one arm she sould be entitled to claim something? She has only on
e child and can not have any more because of the severe problems involved with her health, would she be accused of 'milking the system'? I think not. Each case has it's merit, it's the bad apples that have spoilt it for the rest!

- 10/02/01 Good for you ChaCha. People at work can be so nasty. Stress may actually be depression but people are to afraid to admit for exactly this reason. Where has the compassion gone? |

- 10/02/01 You're right about co-workers (unless they're all at it!). I couldn't believe an e-mail at work today, reporting the illness of an essential member of staff, but describing it as (I quote) "stress (!!!!???!!!)" I may be cynical, but to so blatantly piss-take, as well as bandying someone's illness for all to see; I was livid! |

- 10/02/01 What I feel sad about is that she is now gets depressed because of her lack of mobility and is hooked on morphine. How I wish she sued her employers! Poor thing |
