Advantages: Good for a chuckle
Disadvantages: Come on now
I heard an interesting story on the radio on the way home tonight. It originated from (where else?) the States and it dealt with our American cousins' current outlook on life. They've always been quite taken with our Royal Family and apparently there's an enormous interest in the current scandal overwhelming the Royals, following the collapse of the Burrell trial. You see, apparently there's a deal of speculation in the States among the odder sections of the community that our dear old Queen is actually a creature from another planet who assumes human form in order to avoid terrifying us to death and is here to prey on us - she is the head of a legion of dark forces and is here to enslave us. Yeah, honest, you heard me right, some of these crazies actually believe all this guff. Of course, their slightly askew appreciation of all things conspiratorial has been knocked even more off centre by Old Maj's warning to Burrell to watch himself and beware of the DARK FORCES at work. How can this harbinger of death and destruction be talking about other nasties - is it an awful double bluff? Even more bizarrely, when Piers Morgan was asked what she was talking about, he hinted darkly that the Queen was talking of forces of which she knew nothing! Eh? Anyway, the point of all this is that the age of the CONSPIRACY THEORY is upon us, filtering into every latest news story, speculation that THEY have got their fingers in the pie and are after our children. Now no one seems to have the slightest clue what Old Maj is bumbling on about, whether it be the FBI or CIA or MI5 or some other wild bunch, or even just the pariahs of the press, but clearly even them upstairs have fears about THEM and tremble at the thought. Of course, there have long been stories and rumours about FORCES AT WORK in the death of the Princess of Wales and certainly the discrediting of the Royals has been around for several
years. Other conspiracy theories have the War Against Terrorism being driven by lust for oil rather than an earnest desire for revenge for the doings of September 11. It's a funny old world, treasures, and you can believe what you will. If you believe all this, remember, Sir Alex Ferguson is the son of Darth Vader who has made a pact with the devil involving making his biggest stars have their hair cut in the most bizarre of styles, hence the ever changing moods of Anekin Beckham and Han Ferdinand... Other conspiracy theories... The American establishment v JFK and Bobby Kennedy Check out the wonderful Thirteen Days for an excellent take on the Kennedy years - there weren't many whiffs of conspiracies on show, but clearly the Kennedy Bros had to contend with powerful forces within their own camp. Lee Harvey Oswald was a put up scapegoat to remove the threat to the DARK FORCES from this brash young president.

- 13/11/02 I suppose if you think about things long enough you'll be able to make up a conspiracy theory about anything. But alot of them are entertaining - well the fact that people can believe ridiculous things anyway!! |
