Advantages: Great past time

Disadvantages: Can be frustrating with the rejections

After completing my first short story at the age of six for a classroom assignment I went to my teacher and declared that I wanted to be a writer when I grew up. She tried her best not to laugh at me but gently said that I should think of another career as writing doesn't pay that much.

Being six at the time I believed her and decided to look for other ventures to do in my adult life, everything from dolphin trainer to astronaut.

I came back to writing though when I was thirteen, it started mostly with very bad fanfiction (I had an obsession with the X-Files at the time), through this though I realised that I could create my own characters and storylines so started writing my own work.

I submitted my first "book" to an agent when I was fifteen. It was unformatted and un-edited, no plotting and no general storyline and safe to say it was rejected. I was overjoyed though with the rejection as it felt like an official stamp that I was a writer.

I kept trying throughout the years, learning as I go, I've almost been published twice but it turned out to be bad timing. I'm now 22 and still writing and reaching to achieve the dream of being published. It's been a great learning curve, and it's nice being able to listen to the voices in my head without thinking that I'm completely mad!

Summary: Great hobby for anyone with an overactive imagination
