Advantages: none for me but for them yes but not if they get caught which I dearly hope so

Disadvantages: left with no money and still bills to pay

Like everyone I have heard of hole in the wall machines being marked so that they can copy your card and take money out.

When I go to the hole in the wall I have checked that no one is looking at me typing in the pin number or looking over my shoulder. I have even looked at the machine to see if there is something there that should not be.

I must be one of thousands that if I thought about it I thought it happens to other people/big towns and cities.

Today it happened to me.

How did I find out.

Luckily I have internet banking and can check my balance and account to see what direct debits have gone out and when. So today I checked to see if one had been paid. I was £600 short.

What did I do next

I double checked and sat quietly for a second because yes I was in a state of panic and worked out when I last drew out money and where.

Next

I rang the bank even though it was early in the morning and was told that I would have to go to my local branch and make out a fraud form.

At the Bank

The bank usually makes sure that you have not withdrawn it and forgotten it and ask if you are sure. They did not with me as I was the third person to go into the bank this week.

They got a copy of my bank statement and a note of the hole in the walls number where it was withdrawn. This number matched the other two people so because of that the police had already been informed and straight away they could say it was definately fraud.

I had taken money out of a hole in the wall in Cirencester and presumed it had happened there but the manager told me that sometimes they hold on to the card so it might not have been there but a previous machine that I had been to.

I was to learn later today that it was from that banks own machine - our local branch and a lot of people are coming and saying they have had this happen too.

After filling in a form I was told they would find the machine the money was taken from as this was different from the one it was scanned from. They hope they will get a clear picture of the person who done it.

I will be refunded my money but it will take 4 weeks. Most banks cover it by giving you an overdraft to the same amount that was taken and then when the paper work is done and you get the money back the overdraft and charges are taken off.

I honestly cannot say to you do this or the other to make sure this does not happen to you as I dont exactly know how they done it but if and I hope that it never does, happen to you at least this will tell you what to do and what will happen.

It really does leave a nastly taste in your mouth that anyone can do this and that you somehow had it happen to you.

Please take care as as I found out it can happen to you.

Summary: check the machine better still go into the bank for the money

I have to say I feel unprotected when shopping wihht my card so try hard to avoid it, many thefts often done by retail staff.

What a horrible experience for you. I have never used those wall machines. I was put off by the horror stories such as your. Thank you for telling us about it and reminding us that it can still happen.
