The current 500cc World Champion is having a dire year. The 30 year old Spaniard, having spent years in the shadow of former team mate and multiple World Champion, Mick Doohan, finally won the coveted title in 1999 after Doohan's retirement due to injury and fighting off an able attack from American Kenny Roberts. A previous 125cc World Champion, Criville has had a number of serious accidents in the 500cc class, the most notable being in 1997 at the Assen TT when his hand was trapped under his 130kg bike during a crash leading to injuries which threatened his career.
