Advantages: you feel the diffrence
Disadvantages: expensive
If you are really keen on cycling and you spend more then an hour a session ridding, then you should consider cycling clothing.
I was freezing all this spring ridding my bicycle. No matter haw many clothes you put on you the wind will still get you, it literally cuts trough cotton fabrics. And when you sweat it can feel pretty uncomfortable, and if you don't wear special breathable fabrics the sweat will only sit on your clothes and skin for longer.
I thought my own normal cloths are good enough but boy I was wrong as special type of clothing make a hell of a difference.
Here are a few basic things that I have learnt trough my research and experience about cycling clothing:
***Base layers: - this type of clothing fits tight around the skin and its purpose is to keep you warm in the winter underneath. When sweating occurs these will allow the sweat to evaporate away from your body.
***Windproof/ windstop: A wind proof jacket cane make all the difference when you come down the hill to stop the wind reaching your skin. Windproof jacket are in general highly breathable, made from a really light fabric and you can fold them on small proportion.
***Waterproof: You can get jackets, trousers, overshoes, head wear, and gloves so you can keep the rain away. One big downfall on this type of clothing is that even though they will keep the rain away they are not too breathable, so you will be feeling pretty sweaty underneath.
***Tights: - these are probably the best things to wear when ridding. They are comfortable and practical. They come in a huge selection of fabrics generally man made. I recommend padded types, they might not feel that great when you walk but when you are ridding the bicycle will make a big difference and kelp you be comfortable of the saddle.
Well that is as far as I understand, for the rest I will need a degree to explain.
*** Downfall: cycling clothing's are pretty expensive and if you are a woman is even more so.
****On the good side: well from my experience they do a much better job then normal clothing when ridding especially when you do a 20 miles ride.
One thing interesting I notice is that the more practical the clothing is the more silly it looks, especially for men: tights anyone??
Summary: intresting little things

- 08/03/09 Comfort is everything when cycling, and though it's true that 'tights' don't look too flattering on men who lack the experienced cyclist's 'buns of steel', they are comfortable. :) |
