Advantages: increases fitness, enjoyable
Disadvantages: aches and pains in the nether regions
A couple of weeks ago I tried something which I have failed to do for many years, I cycled ten miles or there abouts. It was a sunny day with only a few clouds in view and in the end perhaps even too hot but nevertheless it was a fantastic adventure. My bike had not been out the garage for years and is currently quite the rust bucket indeed I didn’t realise my tyres were flat until I was several miles away from home despite continuing at any rate.
Despite getting off and walking for several slight inclines, the ride was thoroughly enjoyable. I mentally plotted a route along little country lanes through increasingly isolated villages (starting at my own which actually possesses a village shop and garage). Upon reaching home and plotting my route out on google maps to find out exactly how many miles I cycled (circa 9.8) I felt a tremendous sense of achievement. Being a bored student between A levels and university this is a rare feeling only currently matched by when I have an item sell for higher than I expected on ebay. Hence I decided to continue riding a few miles each day, I now feel physically fitter and no longer feel required to jump off whenever I see a hill or fall into a ditch when I see a tractor. Indeed I have even made the effort to pump up my tyres.
Cycling has given me the opportunity to completely clear my head of all the exam material which has been buzzing around it, at the same time it has allowed me to explore the country like I never have before (I found a charming little pond today). On top of this it has increased my physical fitness no end being a great (and almost painless) cardiovascular activity. Cycling is one of those things which is open to almost everyone whether young or old and I hope that it will now stay with me in years to come, indeed perhaps I should use my student loan to buy me a better bike and some mechanical knowledge.
Summary: Cycling gives one no excuse for not excercising
