Denmark National Football TeamNewest Review: ... the side of the goal and had to be replaced. Denmarks game plan lay in ruins and provided the ideal scenario for England to take advantage of and make their mark, which is certainly what they did. The second goal game with a cross by Trevor Sinclair and then a rather fortuitous flick on by Nicky Butt, wth the ball taking a slight deflection of a Danish defender and ending up perfectly at ... more |

The second match of the second round provided us with a mouth watering tie of England v Denmark. However what was to follow was least expected by everyone including the so called experts. Denmark performed remarkably well in their group stages and ended up topping a difficult group comprising of France, Uraguay and Senegal. Their organization and tactics applied were excellent. Five out of the eleven starting the match for Denmark play there football in Englands Premier League and due to this aswell as the way they play there football, many predicted a very tight English Premiership type of match that would consist of few goals and probably extra time ... It was a quite extraordinary World Cup tournament for the unfancied Danes. They were pitched into a group with the World Champions France, the normally fearsome South Americans from Uruguay and a Senegal side who surprised everybody with their performances. That it should be the Danes who emerged as the winners of the group was a shock to almost everybody, but they did so with some quite high quality team play and industrious football. France's defeat in the first game against Senegal probably gave Denmark a hope that they might stand a chance of getting through, but even then the popular opinion was that France would win their other two games and ... So the cool Danes, 2-0 winners over World and European Champions France, bow out of the World Cup. "How could this happen?" you ask..... "Were they playing Brazil again?" The simply answer is no, Denmark were not playing Brazil again (they lost 2-3 to the France 98 finalists, at the 1/4 final stage in Nantes)..... but England might be, if the Brazilians can beat Belgium. This is how Denmark's 2002 World Cup campaign ended...... As the massed bands marched off the parade ground, after Trooping The Colour in London, the massed ranks of English football fans entered the Niigata Big Swan Stadium to parade the colour ... I, do not think Denmark will ever be the same again, after the retirement of both Laudrup brothers, they have lost that touch of class, needed to open defense, someone to pass a deadly ball which splits defense. They have an ageing goalkeeper in Scheimeichal, who is vulnerable when kicks, comes for crosses, and especially vulnerable to being lobbed by strikers. One question to Pter, he didn't think he could keep himself physically fit for United's matches, so he left so why does he think he can still keep goal for Denmark. Is the pace slower, the international games easier. I do not think so!! ... Read the complete review

Everyone said Slovenia would be the whipping boys, but I knew Denmark would be the poorest team at EURO 2000 and I was proved right. I bet on them losing in all 3 matches, and made a rather tidy little amount. I know they hammered Israel in the playoffs, but Israel aren't very good, and apparently they'd been in a brothel the night before the 5-0 whipping. I don't know what's wrong with Danish football, but obviously they miss the Laudrups. When Jon Dahl Tomasson is your star striker, you're in trouble! (Trust me, I'm a Newcastle fan!) On this showing, it'll be a long long time before they get a team as good as the '92 ... Read the complete review
