Advantages: Relative success, great fans

Disadvantages: Poor football at present

I have now been a fan of Derby County for some considerable years and felt like i should produce a fact-file for those researching the club for any different reasons.

The most famous events in the clubs history come in the years 1946, where the club won the F.A Cup, and in both 1972 and 1975, where, under the guidance of a young and prospering Brian Clough, the side were able to win the league.

However, recent success has been far more measured with the only relative achievement being victory in the Championship playoff final in the 2006/2007 season; under the guidance of Billy Davies.

This success was disappointingly not turned into survival in the Premier League; unfortunately the club finished the year on just 11 points, and all time record and something which will not be beaten for some time.

This massive underachievement was placed on the shoulders of Billy Davies, who was sacked and replaced by Paul Jewell. The side were still relegated into the Championship, but with promise of promotion the next year.

Unfortunately, this never came, Derby flounced with relegation and only just survived, which was no where near good enough for the fans or the board. This led to yet another sacking, leaving the club in absolute turmoil and facing seasons upon seasons of Championship mid-table mediocrity.

However, the installation of Nigel Clough as manager really inspired the fans; believing that if he could achieve half the success of his father then he would become a derby county legend as well.

Things have not started well for Nigel though, who looks considerably out of his depth in this division, having come from the dizzy heights of Burton Albion in the Blue Square Premier League.

His side are placed in the bottom 5 clubs of the Championship and are on the back of 3 consecutive defeats, 2 of which were at home to very poor sides. It remains to be seen how the club can fight back from this, and, emerge out of the depths from the Championship and back into the premier division.

The side maintain a firm rivalry with local club Nottingham Forest, where matches are always heated and eventful. A lesser strong hatred for sides such as Leicester, Leeds and Coventry all exist too.

Watch this space.

Summary: Great club to support
