Advantages: OK in selective short bursts!
Disadvantages: It'll rot your brain!
Before I start, I do have a TV. I didn't for a long time, I made a purposeful decision not to have one. The oddest thing about not having a TV was peoples reactions when you told them that you didn't have one. Treated like some kind of freak, an outcast of society becvuase I'd decided not to have a little flashing box in the corner of my room. I mean TV is without a doubt a sickness in our society, but the most telling thing is the way you are treated for not having one. People would react with disbelief, question whether I was kidding, surely I must have a TV everyone does, don't they?! NO!!! There are millions if not billions of people across the world the do not have a TV. And probably have a much more fulfilling life because of the lack of TV. Firstly not having a TV means you may actually end up having a conversation with other people. Heaven forbid!
I do now have a TV again, not by choice I was given one. What I do now though is only watch very selective programming, and videos that I choose. When the TV is not being watched it goes away, out of sight. There are too many people, especially children, who switch on the TV as soon as the enter the house. In fact for many people, it's the first thing they do on entering their house. Then just sit there like zombies, watching any old crap that is pumped out at them. TV is a way of keeping the masses sweet. The opium of the masses as the famous quote goes.
Through the use of TV the corporations, the government, or just anyone with an agenda can feed us their rubbish. As it has reached the point were no-one questions what they see on TV. It is taken as fact!!! We are fed one view of the world, and we take that as the only view there is. As a method of social control TV is perfect. Brain-washing, you better believe it. So simply I would like to say either... Throw away your television, or at the very least put it away, hide it from view, only get out if there is really something that seems worth watching. Please don't treat your TV as a friend. It's not, it's just a collection a electronic components that allows the powers-that-be to keep you inside your house and off the streets. If you go out onto the streets and start communicating with other people, you may realise what a crap world we live in, and decide to do something about it. Next thing it'll be anarchy, and that'd never do would it?
