Advantages: Entertaining and thought provoking
Disadvantages: None
Over the years there have been some excellent documentaries that have appeared as featue length films and may of these have proven informative, thought provoking and at the sametime entertaining as well.
Man on Wire is a recent such example that I really enjoyed which gave a fascinating insight into the plannning and execution of a most daring high wire stunt between the twin towers and includes interviews with the man behind it.
One documentary that had a lasting impact on those that watched it and one that actually achieved some positive changer is the Morten Spurlock documentary Supersize me where he set out to live solely off McDonalds for 30 days and to chart the impact on his body, as part of his trip he toured America examining the obesity problem in the US and the role big business plays in the food industry, this was both a funny and a scary piece of film making.
Michale Moore is one of the most well known documentary makers, Bowling for Collumbine, an exposure of the gun ulture is my personal favourite however he is most widely known for Farenheit 9/11 based upon theTwin Towers attack and the subsequent wars that America entered into it is a damning critique of the Bush presidency and takes every opportunity to make Bush look the fool, something that you might say is not that challenging but Moore skill is in acquiring the unseen footage that Bush would like to censor.
Of course no list would be complee without including the ultimate rock documentary, Spinal Tap, even if it is a total spoof it is still a solid piece of comedy and deserves some recognition.
Summary: Documentaries on film.
