Advantages: Easily administered in food
Disadvantages: None that I have found
An estimated 85% of dogs over three years of age show some indication of gum disease which is a major cause of loss of teeth. Gum disease is caused by the build up of plaque leading to tartar, bad teeth and consequently bad breath.
PlaqueOff has been developed in Sweden and produced for animals following success with a similar product for human use. It is made from a particular type of seaweed – Ascophyllum nodosum – which inhibits the build up of plaque and is therefore very effective against bad breath. In trials it has been show to reduce plaque by 66% and tartar by 46% in only eight weeks.
It comes in small tubs of 60g which will last a small dog or a cat a full year, a medium dog six months or a large dog three months. It is supplied with a small measuring spoon – similar to an old-fashioned mustard spoon – and the daily dose is: half a spoon for small dogs or cats, a level spoon for medium dogs and two for large dogs. This can be mixed with the food and the animals eat it readily. There is very little taste (yes! I’ve tasted it to find out) and I have fed it to both my six cats and my dog. None of them has objected or, in fact, given any indication that they’ve even noticed that it was there!
What are the results? Well, of course, one tub doesn’t last a year when shared between six cats and a medium sized dog but after the second tub I did notice the difference, particularly with the dog. His breath has certainly improved and his teeth appear to be better as on occasions his gums seemed to be a bit tender.
One of the cats has always had problems – having to have his teeth cleaned by the vet when he was only two years old. Since starting the PlaqueOff treatment he hasn’t had any further trouble.
PlaqueOff is advertised in various animal magazines – for example K9 Magazine (page 70 – issue no: 10) and the January issue of Your Cat (insert between pages 82 and 83 contained a money off voucher). The usual price is £9.99 – which is very good if you only have a small dog.
Would I recommend this to my best friend – definitely – far better than a visit to the dentist! I am just about to order my next supply.
I hope this will be of help – and I thank you for reading it.
Summary: A small amount administered daily can keep your pets teeth in good condition
