Well, I think I know where most of you want to push those cakes the dooyoo staffers are stuffing their faces with in those dreadful corporate photos. But enough about the dooyoo guides lol! Only joking guys!
If the devil had behaved himself back in the day and not got thrown off for various misdemeanours (one-and a half my doing, the rest a stitch up) over his nine tempestuous years of reviewing, my current rate of 152 crowns from 800 reviews in two-and-a-half years as 'thedevilinme' would certainly have seen me post the highest ever amount of reviews on site (and no churn either), and maybe even go close to Pliplops 400 plus crowns with my prolific writing style. I certainly would be snapping at the heels of the so-called 'Dooyoo Gurus', listed on the community page this week. I suspect one or two prominent members that didn't get 'Guru' status on that list will be slightly miffed by that. It looked a bit 'icky', as dooyoo like to put it. But now we know who their favourites are. I'm amazed Ken John didn't get a nod.
My addiction has led to the most comments ever made on dooyoo at over 31,000! I didn't like to rate below 'Useful' on reviews and so a sarcastic comment instead was called for. But now that members get paid for people who just click through on their review I suppose I can dish out some SU`s. I know many work on the rate back policy but I think that can demean the site somewhat. If you're penalized hard for speed rating like I was, then excessive rate back should see two weeks in the hole too. Some members even heckle you if you don't rate back! I think that's a ciao thing though. My rating addiction is creeping up again and this week I did my 38,000th! I have received nearly 40,000. Thanks for that guide. I prefer to give than receive. I also have passed the one million dooyoo miles milestone. I thought I would at least get a dooyoo blazer badge and tie set for that achievement.
I am also addicted to saying it like it is. I get off from it. It's not deliberate to upset people by being controversial, its just to get it out of my system. Its how I feel and you poor sods are going to hear about it. But if punished I am I made my bed and I will lay in it. I hate pacifying my stuff to suit the minority that are eroding the freedoms of this fine country and website, even though I have shamelessly pacified my writing of late to get more crowns. lol. When you don't get a crown for three months from one silly mistake then you sadly hold the ball in midfield until you can get yourself back in the game..
It's not so much how good a writer you are here to crown but how good you are for the site, restraint to avoid confrontation being the best advice I can give from my nine years on and off here. Like in a marriage you have your ups and downs and you have to know when to keep your mouth shut with the misses. If Mrs Dooyoo asks you whether these jeans are the right size you say yes dear, even if their belly is falling over the belt line like an uncontrollable soufflé. If a prominent member winds you up rotten knowing you can't fight back just get your head down, take the nagging, and pile up the crowns.
With me I believe that many of the crowns I got over the years were by taking risks here with my punchy writing style, so, inevitably, the more risks you want to take, a bit like a city trader, and you know what happened to those guys. You want to write the absolute truth that you believe and yet you know just enough people here that matter won't let you say it, why they matter and why you don't. I'm not saying that writers who crown heavily but lack edge in their work are a bad thing for dooyoo, they are clearly very good and the essence of the site, but I am saying they may not be true to themselves by doing that in sections like the dooyoo lounge. I just can not imagine anyone who loves writing like me not wanting to say it as it is. A critic is born to be a critic and that's what we are guys!
Something that does disappoint here is pompous members who try to exert their power over the majority; this silly campaign to ban 50p for short food reviews an example of. At the end of the day writers have different tastes and if writing about Mars Bars for 50p is what's needed to get them here then so be it. Some members like to write 2000 words on smoking whilst others 200 on make-up, but we have to accept that democracy guys. Dooyoo can clearly afford to meet the cost of the 50p per review volume and the purpose of that policy is not so much to get shorter reviews but to increase members and volume here to attract advertising and key word hits that make money through Google adsense, let alone through traffic to the zillions of linked consumer sites. The idea that loads of members are only writing food reviews on food items that cost less than 50p so an instant profit seems rather a silly statement to make. I doubt if 80% of our opinions actually make money here.
There's a site called Alexa.com that's the internets leading statistical analytical service for website performance (so they say) and it lists the top keywords and weblink traffic on dooyoo. Just as food doesn't feature there much nor do a lot of the topics that the members running this anti food campaign like to write on. Come on guys, let people just write how and what they want to write on and let's keep going onwards and upwards. I'm wondering whether the sole critic on Alexa that commented on dooyoo performance was indeed one of those anti-foodies. I doubt if it's a recent comment and is rather rude but it raised a chuckle or two.
"2/5 Stars- Nice if it worked!
"Loads of pop-ups, loads of banners, loads of advertising in general. It's clear where the focus of this site lies and it's not in helping out the consumer in any useful way - that's obvious. The reviews are there, but the only real way to find them is to use a search engine as the site itself is very difficult to navigate unless you're happy to sit there click, click, clicking away to get to where you want to be. And what's with the reviews? Question marks for punctuation? No capital letters? 10,000 words to describe a packet of crisps? Very unprofessional site"
There have been many different types of writers and reviews on here over the years and that's what makes it work. Some deliberately write just enough for their 50p whilst others have more pride and try to improve their writing skills by engaging the reader, for me the ONLY reason to write. Some are dull when listing their 'top ten indispensable items to take on holiday', literally listing exactly that, stating the bleeding obvious that are sure to be on every other members reviews in this category, like a passport and the plane tickets, whilst people like me look at that category as a chance to have fun and not state the blinking obvious but still be practical, joyously forgetting this is just a shopping site after all, but also a place where members at least want to be entertained as they trawl through the drudge and those 10,000 words on the baked beans! Isttothebar and a few others are trying to keep it alive with some feisty in your face stuff, and do our two weeks in the can for our sins, but I do feel too many people here are writing too mildly in the fear of offending and so avoid the perfunctory fortnight in the hole, eroding honest product reviews in the process.
The record for most reviews written on dooyoo has recently be claimed by member shaneo632, his prolific film writing in his grand total of nearly 2000 reviews shows the dilemma dooyoo have when that addiction is robotic. He hardly gets a rate as he averages ten reviews a day so not up long enough on the newest review list to register hits. I like his concise style and he and a handful of other members-and some guides-have trousered a few quid with this approach under the 50p rule. Dooyoo have encouraged that so fair enough. As all of these guys at the top of the all-time list write over 300 words I have no problem with it but you do wonder how long dooyoo can keep paying 50p for 150 words with people this prolific around, he 50p what attracted some of these guys and girls in the first place. 2010 should see a minimum 200 words for your first 50 reviews and then 300 words after that. I'm fed up with most of the Sub-Continent coming on at the weekends and writing drivel. I appreciate 50p in India is about a fiver there but at least structure it guys.
As far as the mechanics of dooyoo goes they have been up and down over the ten years but really perfected it in recent times. In 2007 I was getting around twenty hits per review things were that quiet (speed-rating the only way to get any rates back sadly, very much the elephant in the room back then) but when the moneysavingexpert.com lot pour in we can average four times that. I still average 50 rates and that's without most of the guides rating me (my fault). Suggestions seem a little trickier this year and I am disappointed you lovely people won't get to hear my A-Z of biscuits review! Oh, your not. Fair enough!
But the big one for me is it really is time to list nominations under reviews as then it's a clear pointer to what the bulk of the community think of the review and if a heavily nommed review doesn't crown we can work out what dooyoo didn't like about it. It would make dooyoo`s job easier with that transparency. I saw a movie crown last month which had about 15 rates and likewise spelling mistakes and was clear it had not been proof read against other crownable prospects. I doubt if it had any nominations. On ciao they have the 'Excellent' button and it works well, the standout reviews and writers far more obvious. You can clearly see the members who are there just to chase diamonds, ciao`s crown equivalent. You only get the option to make five 'Excellents' noms a day and so they count. You seriously have to read and rate to get enough nominations to crown there. I fear that dooyoo don't want to introduce that button as the reviews with the most nominations simply wont crown enough. Again, no problem with dooyoo wanting to crown certain commercial reviews, especially at this time of year, but not if it is just about keeping certain members sweet.
What would also be fun is pictures and better editing on reviews. I would love to be able to underline and use italics in my reviews. Bold type would help too. I like to express my work and so if possible could we look into that please dooyoo. Ciao have the photo option to top off your review which is great fun and you can be really naughty with that applet. Dooyoo would probably need to buy another server to cover that but it's just a thought. I think those improvement s would help reviews.
So its congratulations to dooyoo for a website even more addictive to sex and booze these days (I'm over 40 now) and let's hope the next ten years are even better. I know I have been a pain in the butt sometimes so sorry about that but I do love you guys really. As Rene Zellwegger said to Tom Cruise: 'You had me at hello'! But, as its anniversary week, then how about some goodies, guys? It is Christmas after all. We want more stuff! Perhaps double the number of crowns on Tuesday-or money for the crowns-or an amnesty for old members like Proxam who were thrown off for unknown reasons or silly mistakes. I'm sure dooyoo could empty Santa's sack if the put their hand to it. Lol."
Summary: 10 years well spent
