Advantages: Short term diet with excellent results

Disadvantages: Some side effects

Some people hate this diet others love it. I have tried it twice with fantastic results each time. But before i started i did check out the atkins website to see what all the fuss was about. Basically there are 4 stages, induction (2 weeks to jump start your metabolism), ongoing weightloss (continue at a steadier approach for a further couple of weeks), pre-maintenance (finding the right balance) and lifetime maintenance (continuing at a helathy pace that's right for you). On both occasions I just tried the 2 weeks introduction to try and rapidly lose some weight. Basically for this period your confined to eating as much meat, meat, some more meat and certain veggies/salads as you want. It sounds pretty straight forward but it can be quite hard if you are used to eating sugary food and lots of carbohydrates. The overall effect should be that by eating the right food your body starts to burn fat and you lose weight instead of burning carbs. The first time i tried this i really suffered and i did not think that i would actually crave certain foods but i did, however at the end of the 2 weeks i had lost 12lbs. The second time i tried it i lost 8lbs but by this time i was eating a lot healthier prior to the diet. This diet may not be for everyone and there are some side affects, bad breath, constant craving etc, but for me and my partner is was worth it. Try it out but eat sensibly, remember its not about starving yourself its about eating less carbs. You will fins that your eating habits change for the better after this diet.

Summary: Good diet if followed sensibly

The Atkins Diet made a friend of mine very ill, although she's OK now since she's steered clear of it.

I went on the F Plan diet back in the 1980s which is low fat, high fibre and good carbohydrates - it's the opposite to the Atkins in that it concentrates on an intake of good carbohydrate and cutting fat right down to the barest minimum. I lost 7st in less than a year, was never hungry on it, didn't crave any types of food and felt healthier and happier than I've ever done in my life. The only thing with the F Plan - and I wouldn't call it a symptom - is that all the fibre in it does move through your body very fast, but it's supposed to....most of us don't function properly in that bodily department (that's the most discreet/polite way I could describe it lol).

Whatever works for one person though may not work for another and if Atkins works for you, then good luck with it.

Hmm...I don't think the Atkins diet encourages better eating habits. It's been linked to too many lkong-term health concerns for my liking!
