Advantages: look groovy, good variety of bars available.
Disadvantages: painful to sleep on and easy to catch.
I personally love ear piercings although I haven't always been the same. I remember being about 5 or 6 and deciding I wanted my ears pierced. My mum took me to a little jewellers in town and I sat on the little stool, chose some earrings, had my ear wiped and had the dots put on for the holes. She did one and I remember thinking 'crikey, that hurt' and I refused to allow her to do the other one. Haha I laugh when I think of it now but I refused point blank despite my parents begging me to get the other one done, I wouldn't even sit back in the chair so I walked around for 6 weeks with one earring in and took it out to heal up after that.
I had my ears re-done when I was 8 and there wasn't a problem then, I was OK. I think I started to get a buzz then and loved the different jewellery that had become available to me and about three months later, I had my cartilage / helix pierced with a gun. I know this isn't recommended and it has been said that it can shatter the cartilage but mine healed brilliantly.
I went off piercings for a while and got on with my childhood and adolesent years and just recently, as my daughter is mad on piercings started having some more done. I went with my daughter as she had her industrial piercings (Number 2 on the diagram), an orbital in her helix, her daith and her tragus. (Number 5 on the diagram). I then went and ended up having my tragus pierced which I love and then my cartilage on both sides then finally I had my daith pierced which has took so long to heal.
I love my piercings and think they look awesome. I love the industrial although it was a very painful piercing my daughter said. She bled quite badly and if she knocks it, it's very painful and swells up. My piercings cost between £5 for the cartilage to £30 for my tragus which might seem dear, but once it is done, its done. I think they look trendy and interesting and theres a lot of variety of bars to buy for your ears.
During the healing process they can be terrible to heal and can be so hard to sleep on. My daughter had her helix orbital and her tragus on the other side and couldn't sleep properly for about 5 weeks because both ears were too painful to lie on so I would bare that in mind when getting ears pierced.
I like a couple of ear piercings on men, I like a tragus piercing, lobe and maybe the helix / cartilage but nothing else really. I wouldn't discriminate though to be honest, it wound't affect how I felt about a guy.
Overall, ear piercings are awesome and look great. They're not too painful and heal fairly quick so I'd definately recommend getting one, or two or three. :)
Summary: cool bars and piercings. Good to let people see.
