Advantages: Enhances person attire, can make ladies look elegant
Disadvantages: Too many can look tacky
Argh the pain... I got mine done at the age of 17 for a bet, much to my mother's disgust I may add. At the time I was on a training scheme in a local garage and one of the lads bet me to get it done. We agreed that night we'd both go and have our ears pierced, though at separate places as we lived opposite sides of town.
I couldn't drive at the time, so good old dad took me to the local hair dressers on the way home. Not knowing if my mate would hold his end of the bargain, I decided what the heck, it was something different. Entering the shop I slowly approached the desk. Asked for plain old stud to be popped in, left ear of course, well from where I came from it had to be the left ear. Then sat in the chair, the girl approached with a gun explaining how she was going to shoot this stud through my ear. It was at that point I thought that if I was going to get it done, I might as well have two in the one ear....
Ready... Aim... Fire.... Fire. Two short sharp shots and I had two studs in the one ear.... Felt no pain what so ever until....
General advice from the girl, twist the studs in my ear a couple of times daily until the skin heals and wipe daily with alcohol wipe to keep infection at bay. Boy, that first twist was oh so painful.....(Or am I being a typical bloke?) But we got there in the end... I even still have them pierced today. The scary thing was my mate had done exactly the same, two studs left ear, very spooky as we did not discuss anything other than having our ear pierced with one stud.
So, what do I think about ear piercing? Well I certainly wouldn't prevent my kids from getting their ears done. Though I certainly don't believe it should be my decision, something like piercing is a personal choice so I would never pierce my children's ears at a very young age. My daughter did toy with the idea last year but bottled it. Am sure one day she will be brave enough, but that is purely her decision.
My personal view is parents should not pierce children's ears at a very early age, say 2 years old, even younger in some cases I have known. I think they should wait at least until they are 10 years old, this seems to be the age these days when kids are realising their own identities and wanting to express themselves, very scary. I also tend to think that you can put too many earrings in, when people have four or five earrings in the one ear that does not appeal to me, however as mentioned it is the persons unique decision and choice as to how they dress themselves in jewellery.
Ears which are pierced, especially the ladies can look very elegant if wearing the right earrings. Again, my personal like (on women) is for small elegant type earrings as oppose to very big loopy style ones which dangle down to your shoulders. On men studs or small rings don't look out of place. In this day and age, where piercing has expanded to all places around the body, piercing of the ears seems tame to what it was when I first had mine done.
As I get older, I do sometimes wonder whether I should remove my earrings, though most of the time I forget they are there until someone mentions them to me. One day, maybe one day I'll grow out of them, but for now they are very much apart of me. Maybe something to do with the super glue the girl used at the hairdressers lol.....
Summary: It started with your ears...nowadays anything goes ;)
