Newest Review: ... we notch our marks on the bedposts of time by using either music or football. Well, at least most blokes do along with particularly good beer sessions or who won the FA Cup that year. So there we were; I’d proposed (don’t recall), she’d accepted and we’d decided to do the traditional thing and ask for permission. Having bought a suitable diamond encrusted ring (cost me a few quid although, again, can’t remember any details. I wasn’t on cocaine…honest), I’m all ready to shove it on my betrothed’s finger. Phase 2 and 3 were to be dropping in on chez ma-in-law and do the deed and ask the question. Simple. “I don’t want start any blasphemous... more

Crowned Review Engagement Stories: The Rightful Order of Things (972 words)

There was a time when asking for a girl’s hand in marriage was the done thing. Maybe it’s still that way now; I’m really not sure but certainly for us keen-to-do-wells then it seemed to the right thing to do…or at least attempt anyways. Over the years, we’ve all been taken in by that Bing Crosby gentlemanly type stuff of proposing under the light of a silvery moon whilst swigging martini as ice-skaters gently slide past your horse and carriage. Alright then, maybe not all of us but I’ve watched enough old movies to know that there was a gentler time and maybe the way it was in that time was the way things should be. Of course, that doesn’t reckon with any adverse ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Married as many years as there were diamonds in the ring (972 words)

THE PROPOSAL Not the most romantic I suppose, we worked together and at lunchtime one Friday had been to the pub with the rest of our colleagues. Us girls were trying each other’s rings on and when we came out my fella turned to me and just said “would you like a ring of your own then?” I just muttered something, not realising that this was his way of proposing!!! Anyway, the next day off we went to the poshest jewellery store in town. I had my mind set on a single diamond, but when we looked in the window one ring just shouted from all the rest “this is the one!”. The price tag was, well, rather high to say the least but when we got inside he asked ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Engagement Stories: ice rinks and diamond rings (447 words)

Getting engaged...everybody dreams of the perfect proposal. Dinner out with an engagement ring sitting in the champagne glass, Romantic walk and he drops onto one knee. If only everyone was as romantic as that. The first time I got engaged with my ex partner was maybe a little romantic in thought but not the way he did it. His plan was to ask me to marry him on Christmas day. He’d written “will you marry me” in my Christmas card and the card was a fiancée one. I would have opened it in front of the family so everyone could see and congratulate us etc. But he chickened out; I got it on Christmas Eve in his bedroom, just the two of us. His mum was downstairs ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review You want to hear about Romance? (1033 words)
by - written on 19/06/06 (Useful, 263 readings)

I grew up dreaming of romance, waiting for the day that I would go down on one knee before the woman I knew in the deepest well of my soul that I wanted to share my life with forever, and ask her to be with me for eternity. Of course it would be in a romantic ancient city, maybe Prague or Central park in New York, or at the grand canyon. Of course I would ask her father for permission to marry her. And we would have one of those carriages at our wedding and maybe even have everyone dress up like civil war re-enactors. See what I mean? You have to understand that I grew up reading romance novels. I had to practice reading a lot because the other kids at ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Engagement Stories: I'm Engaged - Woo Hoo!!! (900 words)
by - written on 12/06/06 (Very useful, 219 readings)

When I was younger I used to sit there and imagine what it must be like when a guy asks you to marry him. I used to imagine that it would take place in a great romantic setting after an extremely romantic day and then the guy would be so nervous about asking and that I would cry and then everything would be perfect. Of course this was just a dream and that in reality you have to basically try and get as close to it as you can. As you have probably guessed seen as I am writing this review that I am now engaged to my wonderful boyfriend Dave and I am extremely happy and I think that this category will be so interesting to find out how some people do decide to ...  Read the complete review
