Advantages: Pen to paper as good as anyone

Disadvantages: boring football, poor formations and poor management

Thank god we have seen the end of Mclaren has gone. It was a big surprise for both me and most of the country when Mclaren was annnounced as the new manager to take over from Sven 18 months ago. At the time i felt it was the wrong decision, why appoint an average manager who was a part of the sven regime when we could have appointed o'neil?!

Still Its up to the FA to make the decision of who manages the National football team, i just wish they'd take more care of who the people of the country would prefer as a manager.

England didnt start off to badly under Mclaren, but loosing to croatia and more importantly drawing to macedonia at home was a huge disappointment, and ultimately prooved costly for England and in my view it was these 2 early results which sealed their fate and ensured that they wouldn't qualify for Euro 2008.

England just didnt play attractive football throughout the tournament and they didnt deserve to qualify. Many would argue they were unlucky not to beat the Russians away, but then they should never have been in the position whereby they had to win in the first place.

England were given another chance when Russia failed to beat israel away, and actually lost the game 2-1. Following this The country knew all england would need is a draw at home to Croatia. Neither team needed a win as Croatia had alread qualified.

However, the same old story sadly for England, we had a few injuries with key players, most notably Rooney, Terry and Owen,
but with Mclaren opting for a 4-5-1 formation I always knew we would be in trouble because we've never been able to play well in that formation, it never worked under Sven so why would it now?!

Croatia played surprisingly attacking football and in the end they beat us 3-2 and that was England out, with the Russians winning their game against Andorra. I only hope The FA will make a better decision on who the next manager will be.

Summary: Thankgod Mclaren has GONE!

For me Hargreaves was the player of the tournament for England and that was something Sven got right. In the end England despite the hype didn't have a good enough squad to beat any of the half decent sides. They failed against Sweden and (a weakened) Portugal the only reasonable sides they played in the whole of the competition.

Now it's time to get rid of the old guard and bring some younger players through for the the next Euro as preparation for the next world cup.
