Firstly, the photo above this article isn't and never has been Southend-on-Sea High Street, and I don't know where it came from...but never mind! Last year, I paid a visit to the High Street of my old stamping ground, and wanted to cry - I felt a deep urge to stand in the middle of the modern-day wasteland, and just scream at anyone who was willing to listen........"What in hell's name have you done to my town??"
