Advantages: when well spoken .

Disadvantages: none

People all over the world are keen to learn the English Language, probably because, when the British Empire was at its peak ,the sun never set without a British influence. Then commerce was an influence. In History it has always been the case that the most prosperous and powerful Nation governed which tongue was spoken .there was sometimes an overlap ,Like when the Romans were in power Greek was still the common Language.

Some of our words have a Roman influence I believe, I cant recall these words at the moment .
If spoken well without an Australian or American accent .English is pleasing to the ear. Also without slang words and misused words ,there are fashions in these every now and again. The words clear and clearly are in vogue at the moment ,used to often in speech ,when other words would be more appropriate .Like plainly, distinctly ,obviously .

One I hate is the addition to every sentence with the slang word, yeh. Also the turning of a statement into a question by change

of sound in the speakers voice tone, that is also popular and is manipulative in use.

its a good idea to check some of the words we use with a dictionary,a good Dictionary is chambers Etymological English Dictionary.

I find when I talk to my French Canadian friend ,that its like an english review .because I have to find other words.

I always enjoyed English Literature at High School ,and read most of Dickens books.
This kind of reading Helps us speak better English, sorry if all this sounds a bit critical but English spoken well is music to the ear .For me it is

I like the American accent and the Australian one too ,in those countries I have friends in both countries .I do like the Cockney accent, and other accents but find English ...English .pleasnt to listen to .I lost my accent a bit when I was ridiculed at school ,so I think I have room for improvement still.

My Brother Has a language School in Helsinki ,very

difficult Language to speak and learn.I love the French and Russian accents too.

Postscript:I am writing this opinion about the (southern accent as it used to be ) not the beautiful regions of these Isles ....variety is the spice of life isnt it.:)

Further to this comment, this category has made me think ,where did we all descend from, and how did the different accents originate,we all have various nationalities in our family tree.Indeed some of us could be related .I introduced two ladies to each other, and one had studied Her family tree,do you know the other lady found she had a relative that was part off that geneological Record ,she was quite shocked.

I am facinated by this subject,I recently found I have a distant relation who is French surname :De la Croix,I have an Irish grandmother surname Hayward ,an english greatgrandfather called Winyard,my mothers maiden name.My Fathers surname was Ellis, with Jewish connections ,from the name Elijah. My Grandfather always joked He had Romany roots.who knows there could be some Scots and Welsh there somewhere:)We all have this mixture in our ancestry.

I will add some more on the history of the english language maybe some of the more learned dooyooers could help me wheres Myk Reeve .
