“ Type: Bath Salt „
Epsom salts are used to draw toxins from the body and help alleviate stress to joints and muscular aches and pains. They help me with all 3 of these claims and i feel relaxed and refreshed after using them in my bath!
You can buy them pretty much anywhere that sells health and beauty or bathroom products (i.e Boots, Superdrug, BodyCare, supermarkets), and they can come in many shapes and sizes - often in pretty little tubs or boxes. They range from between £1 and £10 depending how much you get in a tub.
All you have to do is put a handful of them in your bath water and let them work their magic. They obviously don't have the benefits of a spa massage or anything to that effect, but they do the job well for a home based product. You can buy all different scents so your skin will smell wonderful as well as making you feel relaxed and silky smooth.
I came across Epsom Salts by chance after going to a floatation tank centre and spending a session in a relaxing floatation tank. Whilst in there I was amazed at how silky the water felt. It really felt soft and smooth on my skin and I could feel it moisturing me whilst I floated. I thought oil had been added to the water and was really surprised when I was told it was just Epsom Salts.
They might be old fashioned but a small handful of these Salts to your bath water really do make itno a very luxurious feeling bath. The Salts are also supposed to be very good for your skin and much kinder to sensitive skin than bath foam, scented oils etc. They also make the water more floaty which is a nice experience. I believe some people with eczema and other skin conditions do find that these Salts help and sooth their skin too.
Epsom salts are available from most chemists including Boots annd vary in price from about £3 - £5.
What are Epsom salts?
Epsom salts are a pure naturally occurring mineral found in water called Magnesium Sulfate. They are called Epsom salts because the compound was first distilled from water in the town of Epsom.
Magnesium is the second most abundant element in human cells and the fourth most important positively charged ion in the body, so it is crucial to good health.
Magnesium also helps to regulate the activity of more than 320 enzymes and performs an important role in many bodily functions, from muscle control and electrical impulses to energy production and the elimination of toxins. It has a demonstrated calming effect.
Sulfates, the other major component, have been shown to be effective in improving nutrient absorption and toxin elimination.
Celebrity fans include Tyra Banks, Gwyneth Paltrow and Heidi Klum.
Epsom salts are a sedative for the nervous system. They help to reduce swelling and soothe jangled nerves and sore muscles after a long day. A little lavender essential oil can help.
- I discovered Epsom salts as a health treatment for Asperger Syndrome. There is a theory that people with AS are naturally magnesium deficient, and it can be absorbed through the skin during bathing.
Autism and Autistic Spectrum Disorders are often accompanied by bowel disorders that make it difficult to absorb nutrients and to eliminate the body of waste. Because both magnesium and sulfates can be absorbed through the skin, giving the autistic child a warm bath with 1-2 cups of dissolved Epsom salts just before bedtime helps extend the child's natural sleep cycle and ease digestive function.
It's also a good idea to avoid combining with bubble bath as it contains chemicals and artificial colourings that can irritate a sensitive nervous system and cause sleeplessness and hyperactivity.
My child had bowel problems, sleep problems and hypersensitivity to noise. I believe Epsom salts have helped him a little with each issue. The dark shadows under his eyes have all but disappeared. I am sure it is the salts because I try to implement only one therapy at a time, to get a clear picture of what works.
(Other therapies for ASD include implementing a gluten free/casein free diet, removal of msg and aspartame, allergy testing, candida testing, efa's, probiotics, digestive enzymes, vitamin therapy, very large doses of vitamin B6, secretin, homeopathic treatments)
-Soaking in an Epsom salts bath of at least 1% solution can effectively treat or give relief from disorders like eczema, rheumatism, arthritis, insomnia. A recent nutritionists study also published findings that bathing in Epsom salts promotes faster healing of injuries.
- For the relief of occasional constipation Epsom salts act as a gentle laxative. Dilute 1-4 g dissolved in a glass of warm water and drink once a day to stimulate the bowels.
-Doctors use Epsom salts to help try to prevent premature births.
-Soaking a splinter in Epsom salts dissolved in water draws it out.
- Epsom salts are a very good skin softener and help to treat patches of dry rough skin, they're not drying like sea salt.
- They make a great foot soak and softener, and can treat puffy ankles, athlete's foot and toenail fungus at the same time!
-Supercharge your cleanser by adding half a teaspoon of salts to your regular cleanser.
-Also supercharge your oily hair shampoo by adding 7-8 teaspoons to half a cup of the shampoo. The salts help draw the oil out from the hair.
-They make an efficient exfoliator, either on their own or mixed with an oil.
-A poultice of Epsom salts applied to the face removes blackheads and removes inflammation from spots.
-Detox in an Epsom salt bath. The magnesium encourages your body to quickly shed toxins which encourage water retention and cling onto fat, also enabling easier weightloss. The Epsom salts will also boost digestion and potentially even reduce cellulite. Add two cups of salts in your bath water and soak your toxins away for twenty minutes.
Other practical uses
-In the garden they keep slugs away, make a good fertiliser and feed plants, you can even sprinkle it onto your houseplants to nourish them.
-Dissolving an ounce of Epsom salts in warm water and added to each batter cell regenerates car batteries.
-Mix equal amounts of Epsom salts and detergent to clean bathroom tiles.
Epsom salts cost about £5 for 1 kilogram.
They can be bought from any pharmacy or health shop, for large amounts the best deals are online. I use eBay or Amazon.

Epsom salts are an excellent way of combating stress and alleviating muscular aches & pains. The high magnesium sulphate content in epsom salt baths facilitates the removal of acids through the skin to help detoxify together with a mild diuretic effect. Plus the magnesium is absorbed into the body which can alleviate many conditions. Wonderfully relaxing, epsom salts have a soothing effect on the nervous system and help to boost the body's level of seratonin which gives a feeling of well-being and can help you get a good night's sleep. They are a wonderful natural treatment for sportsmen and woman as well as patients suffering from arthritis and rheumatism.
