The Passionless Of Sven

Advantages: Only a few more months left of Sven's negative tactics and boring football
Disadvantages: Are there any, the only way is up
So Svenís been at it again. His meeting with a fake sheik couldnít have come at a worse time with the world cup a matter of months away. Of course there are always two sides to every story and it seems everyone has an opinion.
Personally Iím in two minds. On one hand the news of the World acted a bit underhand considering the job Sven has to do in the summer. Iíve no doubt that come the World Cup, the paper will be slobbering at the mouth with back pages full of England propaganda. I can see it now, Becks and Rooney draped in the St George. Frank Lampard mocked up to look like a lion Ė you get the picture.
But this is the newspapers job, they need sensation to sell copy and with this story theyíve certainly achieved that. But you canít really feel sorry for Sven, even he canít deny the video footage and the things he has said. Perhaps if he was negotiating a job after the world cup when his contract ended then Iíd say fair enough. But the fact of the matter is he wasnít, he still has another two years after that. A deal his agent had negotiated at a pretty price for the FA. So where are Svenís priorities, well Iím not really sure anymore.
I have never been a huge fan of Svenís stint in charge of the national side. I donít understand the FAís faith in the man for the long term and the large amount of money theyíve paid him. Yes weíve reached the major tournaments but given the talent at his disposal, this should be a formality. People have pointed at his overall record and wins always look good on the sheet. But you have to consider where the majority of those wins came from. Most of the games under Svenís guidance have come against teams with little stature on the world stage.
When it comes to the crunch he has always bottled it and the style of football played by the England team is pretty dire. Hereís a prediction for the world cup. England will huff and puff their way through the group stage. They will play at a pedestrian pace and be fairly negative. Meanwhile you will see other games where teams will play football on the floor at pace and with attacking flair. This is what I want to see from England but Iím always left wanting.
Past the group stage, England will come up against a major opponent and will struggle. If lucky, they will scrape through on a penalty. If it goes the usual way, weíll get beat but show a bit of heart that appeases the nation.
Either way I cannot see England winning the world cup. Sure theyíve got the players in the squad but Iíve yet to see a team in recent years that plays as a complete unit.
I really think the FA were put in a tough position this week. They couldnít really sack Sven because that would just leave them very little time to get a new man in. But on the other hand his comments and actions certainly canít have lifted the spirit. It has now thrown a dark shroud over the England team and one that will follow on into the tournament.
But if were me who had the final decision then I would have said thanks Sven but goodbye. The England team have been under achieving and the salary that Sven takes hasnít been justified.
For the future I really hope the FA have learned from this affair. We need to see an Englishman in charge of the team. One who can bring back the passion but also has the balls to make the decisions. I think Sven has stuck with some players because of their status rather than their ability to fit into a team of eleven.
Letís hope that the next few years see England and the nation get back to the excitement and passion of 96 when El Tel was in charge.
Summary: Sven will we be getting the passion back
