Advantages: Completeness?

Disadvantages: Kids can access the site, who would want to be a guide, out of place.

As a fierce opinionated libertarian I was quite surprised with my reaction to the idea of erotica on Dooyoo…thanks but no thanks. I think such a section would be fairly pointless and probably wouldn’t get much in the way of reads or votes. Plus, who would want to be the guide of such a section? I really think the inclusion of such a section would just be for completeness and for little else.

What would you describe as Erotica?

Media designed solely to sexually stimulate. While I do believe there is plenty of art which can be seen as fairly erotic, I feel that true erotica has little to do with true art and its sole desire is to sexually arouse.

Would you like to have a category dedicated to this?

My feelings on this are above and below. Personally it wouldn’t bug me but I feel it would gain a lot of complaints from members and non-members, and I feel it wouldn’t be the most active section on the site…lets face it if you view porn you are still seen as a bit of a perv (wrong as this view may be) and I doubt most reviewers on this site want to be seen that way. Also there would be issues about kids accessing the site.

Have you ever watched an erotic movie and/or a porno movie? If so, what is your general idea on this kind of movies?

I watched a few with my friends when I was far too young to be watching them, perhaps so young that all I could do was laugh. I was a teenager but I didn’t find the material remotely arousing, it was just too fake and obvious, really quite degrading to all parties involved, I felt. I think people have the right t do whatever they want in their own homes (so long as its legal obviously), but to me this sort of blatancy is not remotely attractive…I think subtlety is far more sexy. However each to his own and as long as porn doesn’t portray rape or extreme violence (S&M is a slightly different issue to real violence, I think), or (and clearly this should go without saying) anything involving underagers, I don’t see it as a bad thing at all.

Have you ever used a so-called adult toy also know as sex toys or sex aids? If yes, which ones and what is your personal view of these products?

Yes, I have a little “goodie drawer” by my bed, for a while I felt I was the sole customer keeping Ann Summers afloat. I have the rampant rabbit and quite a few other bits and pieces kicking about. To be quite frank with you I hardly use them any more, again sex toys are a very obvious thing that goes against the sexiness of subtlety…plus all the buzzing really tends to give things away to your flat-mates or neighbours. I also found, (and excuse my inclusion of faaaaaaaaar too much information here) that using these sorts of buzzing toys actually makes you numb and after a short period of time you begin to become desensitised in certain parts of your body which is not a good thing in my view! I really feel sex toys are over-rated.

Many people say that British are prudish. Do you agree? Many newspapers in this country display photos that other papers in most of Europe would never display. Are we a two-faced country when it comes to Erotica? Shy to show it in public, but happy to dig into it in private?

I once heard someone say “In the rest of the world, sex is a fact. In America its an obsession” and I really feel this is also true of Britain. I don’t understand why we are allowed to ogle barely eighteen year old girls showing off their breasts while dressed as school girls on page three, and why we have pre-teen stars like S Club juniors (who seem to have disappeared, but I’m using them as an example) being a paedophiles wet dream and yet any slightest suggestion of paedophilia sends the tabloids into a hanging, lynching, “BURN THE WITCH” style frenzy. I think after all our times of being uptight and prudish, a certain sector of society is rebelling and this is sending out very mixed messages about sex.

Have you ever had erotic dreams? If so, describe one.

I’m going to pass on this question…its too personal even for me to answer!

The idea of an erotic category on Dooyoo surprised me. While I guess it would be doing something for free speech, I reckon that’s about all the good it would be doing. Lets face it, such a category would start all sorts of discussions about the ease of children being able to view the website, and in my opinion its pretty hard to look at something like erotica with the critical eye of a reviewer. Most of the reviews I really enjoy are book, movie and music reviews and I reckon there would be limited use of this category, as not only would people be reluctant to read, they’d be reluctant to post. So it’s a good idea, and an interesting one to debate, but I think we should pass.

Summary: Review format shamelessly pinched from Azawi74 (I think).

There is a clear line between erotica and pornography. I am very intereted in eroctica and it's sole purpose is not to sexually arose. I am also really into 1950s erotica. I think it would be really interesting to have a section for it here. If you don't want to read it, you wouldn't have to. Good op though, thoughtfully written and good reasons given for your opinions. Donna x

Mm I think an erotica section would be abused, although I do have a great book I could do a review on. Sheena

At least you also addressed the topic aside from answering all the silly questions!
