Advantages: A world free of pain, Honour, A human right
Disadvantages: Legal implications
If I ever got to the situation where I genuinely thought I had no future and that death was the best option then "Let me die" would be my plea. We have the right to vote, we have the right to eat, sleep or drink, we even have the right to take drugs, smoke or drink alcohol so why should this basic human right be denied to us? The answer is that it shouldn't. If my mother was lying terminally ill in hospital and that every waking hour was torment and pain for her and there was no chance of recovery, upon her instruction I would personally "kill" her, just as I would hope that someone else would for me. I stress that if there is no chance of recovery then it is an option but it would not be sensible if there was any chance, however small, of recovery. I would also ensure that this was the actual goal of the sick person and it wasn't the pain talking - this could be done by signing a document in a healthy state of mind that said if you ever got into a state of eternal torment and pain and there was no way back then it would be the perogative of a designated person to assist you in your death. I don't understand the people who have their dogs put down when they are in deep suffering but refuse to accept that euthanasia is a step forward.

- 20/01/02 I appreciate that everyone is entitled to their own opinion but unless you've actually had to live in the situation you describe (I have) then I don't feel you should be writing articles such as this - sorry. Sue |

- 20/01/02 I really think you should leave the important stuff alone until you settle down and start to write more detailed and balanced opinions.
At the moment you are churning out too many ops for anyone to take you seiously, and stop for two seconds to think about how someone who is depressed and cotemplating euthanasia would feel seeing the few words you have pulled together to make an op.
I am sure you could write very well if you slowed down and wrote maybe one op per day, and read other peoples ops as well.
