Advantages: Is funny, caring and very loving
Disadvantages: Can be sensitive and indecisive
Well on this cold Saturday morning, I have decided to write a little about my Dad. My Dad is called Donald, I have always wondered why this is as there is no-one else called Donald in his family nor does he have Scottish roots. Everyone calls him Don, there was some initial confusion when they had my younger brother and decided to call him Donald too but this was soon remedied by calling them Big Don and Little Don.
Dad was born on the Wirral in 1931 which makes him fairly old now. He moved to Hunts Cross in Liverpool soon after and first met my mum just before an air raid in the Second World War, he borrowed her tricycle.
Dad served an apprenticeship as a toolmaker and ended up working in the same factory as my grandad. It has recently been known as Valor and Stoves and now GDA. They made gas appliances. Dad did further qualifications at night school and moved into engineering and quality control. He was made redundant at the grand age of 58, and against the odds found a new job working in a company that designed hovercrafts and similar. This job included CAD and Dad found a passion working with computers.
When we were little Dad was always good fun although he could be cross too and I always remember him saying 'Hells Teeth' when things went wrong. I think he coped pretty well really as my mum worked nights as a deputy matron, so Dad often had to cope with four kids and two dogs by himself at the weekend. He worked pretty long hours so he must have been tired.
Dad could sometimes be hard to live with because he is very sensitive and could take things the wrong way. Another problem with both my parents is that they are fairly indecisive. I remember one Sunday they couldn't decide where to go out for the day, Dad wanted to go to Yorkshire and Mum to the Lakes, they didn't end up going anywhere!
I have always been close to Dad and when I was small I was definitely a Daddy's girl, probably because I couldn't get on my Mum's knee as my little brother was always there. Dad has a very infectious laugh and he is a real joker. Since he has been retired he has really relaxed and enjoys going away in the caravan, long walks and playing Sudoku. His main interest though is his computer. He is very up on technology for his age and must be one of the oldest members of Facebook!
The one thing that makes me sad is that Dad never got to go to university. He is so bright and there is nothing about maths he doesn't know and I think he would have done really well. He loves to learn new things and is always passing on his knowledge to me. He is wonderful with the grandchildren who love spending time with him.
The funny thing is that people have always said how much I look like my Dad and when they do we look at each other and smile, because I am adopted!
Summary: My lovely Dad...
