I thought I would share with you my dad! I have read quite a few reviews under the discussion of 'Dad' and have now decided to let you all know about my dad and how a fantastic dad he is to me!
My dad met my mum when she was 15 and he was 24 in 1969. Apparently, as my mum tells me, she was walking down a local street with a friend; my dad was in a car with one of his friends. As my mum passed the car my dad saw that she had a cigarette and shouted 'give me a cigarette!' and that was the start of their love story. What a chat up line! A few months later my mum turned 16 and they were married!
My dad always worked extremely hard when we were kids (by we I mean me, my sister and my three brothers). He had been a lorry driver from the time he could drive and he did this work throughout his working life. I am the youngest and everyone calls me a 'daddy's girl'. I can always remember my dad would sometimes fall asleep on the sofa at home in the middle of the day after working an early shift. I would sit on the sofa next to him and fall asleep for the afternoon. This was when I had come home from nursery in the afternoon. I can always remember when this happened as we would buy a Mars Bar from the local shop, cut it in half and each have a piece!
All the others were at school and mum would be busy so me and dad had a great time!
Growing up I can remember that my parents were not really drinkers, but they did enjoy going out and meeting with friends. I will never forget one time they went out and dad came back really drunk! I had never seen him drunk before and he was just so funny! Mum was not drunk and it was a good job she wasn't as she had to get dad home! My dad always used to multi packs of 'Dreamy' bars, which are similar to Milky Way Bars. All us kids were allowed a couple of them, but no more.
As dad was drunk I decided to take advantage and asked him if I could have a 'Dreamy' bar. He replied that I could have as many as I wanted! Well that was it! All us kids dived to the fridge and grabbed the whole packet and all the bars were gone in a matter of seconds!
The next day (after he had got rid of the headache!) he went to the fridge and found there were no 'Dreamy' bars left! He rounded us all up, asked us if we had eaten them, of which we said 'yes'! He was just about to tell us off when mum appeared and told him the whole story! Dad didn't know what to say and we had the best witness ever, mum!!
I could go on forever and a day telling little stories about my dad, but that would be the longest review ever, so I won't do it!!
Dad suffered a heart attack in 2002 and had a double heart bypass in 2003. Everything was going well until he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2007. Dad was given 12 months to live, but dad never lost his humour or his pride. On the day he told me he had 12 months to live, he looked at me with a straight face said 'come on, get the tears over with because we are going to enjoy everything from now on'. He then lit his face up with the biggest beam you could imagine!
Dad died Christmas 2008 on mum's birthday. He passed the 12 months that was given to him and ho fought hard to do this and managed it. He was always stubborn!
My profile picture is of me and dad having a fun day in the garden pulling faces for the camera! This is how I remember my dad and always will. He was so much fun, loyal and loved all his family very much. Everybody will say the same about their dad, but my dad was the best that me and my siblings could ask for, and always will be.
