Exams or coursework - which is a better judge?

Newest Review: ... coursework is actually a blessing in disguise. Coursework gives the student time to think about the topic, properly research it and make sure the piece is coherent. You have weeks to do it so you can make sure you won't just submit 'panic writing''. People might call this cheating but I certainly don't agree with this sentiment. No one tells you what to write so after the question, you're by yourself. The marking system is a lot more stringent so if you cock up, they won't be lenient and blame it on pressure (like in exams). Simply put, it's your own fault for not researching properly! It might be a drawn out process of seeing how ... more

Everyone has had to sit an exam or do some coursework during their life with education so I'm going to try and summarise my own feelings about them (especially as I am still a student and we have our own ideas about them!) Coursework: I used to hate doing coursework. It was mundane, you would have to spend hours writing up things you already knew and, for some reason, my school would always put the coursework deadlines for the same week. We would all be put under a lot of pressure to borrow books beforehand and try to sort out our lives so we could juggle all the different topics we had to write about. However, now I'm at university coursework is ...  Read the complete review

After recently completing GCSEs, with A* target grades, and moving into A Levels over the next two years, this subject was a perfect category for me to write about. However, this is not the only reason that I chose to write about this. I have had several experiences of exams and coursework over the past two years and there are so many aspects that can be looked at. ~~ Advantages of Coursework ~~ Coursework is work that is completed, like projects or essays, that are marked and graded and account for a certain percentage of an overall grade. This has several advantages. Firstly, there are extreme cases in which students may not be able to attend ...  Read the complete review

When you first read this question I'm sure like me loads of people would opt for coursework as it seems easier than having to learn for an exam, and maybe you are like me and find exams hard as you can never hold all the information in your mind to actually sit a exam and pass with a good score. I was at school before GCSE's were put into school but I was really upset that they introduced them after I had left. I have since done a couple of GCSE'S and was surprised at the amount of course work you had to do. Image that amount times 5 to 7 other subjects!! And homework on top of that as well!! An awful lot of extra hard work our children have to do these ...  Read the complete review

Having worked as a teacher for few years, both in Uk and abroad, I think that both coursework and Exams are a good way of assessing students. I also think that some disciplines may require more of one or the other. I will go over both now. EXAMS Surely wherever the oral skills need to be assessed, the exam is the only way. I used to teach languages. You can to some extent trust and rely on students writing as essay as part of their course work, but if you want to test their speaking skills, the exam is the only way. Exams also prepare students to the idea of working with deadlines, something which is very important when you then enter the ...  Read the complete review

I intend to make a fair judgment about which shows a pupils talent the most out of Exams and Coursework. Firstly, I am going to talk the advantages and disadvantages of exams Advantages of exams. An exam is always feared by a student and it often brings out the best. It teaches students to cope with pressure and often gives a sound judgment. The pupil can do a great deal of revising; this often means that they learn the work better than they knew it before they began revising. They also show the quality of the pupils' memory and their ability to memorize facts and data. An exam also shows what a pupil is capable of without a book to use as ...  Read the complete review
