Advantages: cruely raised Chelsea fans' hopes, before compehensively crushing them

Disadvantages: losing to Ken Bates' cheque book army

Once again, the chairty shield has proven to be nothing more than a chance to get the new shirts won in before the first real game of the season. As an indication of form for the coming season, nothgin is more useless. However, after betaing United, and therefore becoming the Supreme World Champions of Football, Chelsea have shown exactly what they are made of this seaon, and likewise, so have United. After spending the GNP of Libiya on worthless foreigners, Chelsea are doing even worse than last season, with the anticpation of a relegation battle in prospect. After buying only Barthez, United are looking better than ever, with the homegrown players yet again providing the nucleus of the side.

Its not as if the Charity shield is a worthwhile indicator of form. United lost 3-0 to Arsenal last season, yet went on to win the league by 17 points. In Jaap Stam's first game, agianst Arsenal in the chairty shield, he was hopeless. Since then, he has been voted Europes best defender 2 years running, and now looks a bargin at only £10.25m, or the price of one Chris Sutton.

With any luck, this season's title race will be much closer. No one wants to see a team win by such a considerbale margin, not least the United fans. However, anyone who thought the Chairty shield was a sign of things to come has probably shoved their blue flags up the a***s by now, to prevent anymore talk of Chelsea winning the league.

Summary:
