Gone are the days when the nation was interested in the charity shield. Gone are the days when it actually meant something to people. Nowadays it has turned into a pre season brawl for the FA cup winners and league winners.
Its a shame that it has sunk to this. Viewers do not want to watch it. Fans dont turn up to see it live the weay they once did.
Without Wembley to draw the crowds next season, there will be even less interest. Im afraid it has happened to the league cup as well. Teams are now fielding weak teams as they would rather concentrate on the league. The Charity shield suffers the same. Managers do not want to risk their starlets in a pre season match which will gain them no points and only get them some worthless silverware. No place into europe is at stake.
I say, scrap it. If you want to raise money for charity, ask all FA clubs to make a donation once a year.
