Advantages: It raises money for charity
Disadvantages: The format needs to be looked at
Why is it that Every time I go to look at ceefax, it says "Final Score, Charity Shield: Blah 10 Blah 0? The Charity shield is a mockery of the Engish Game, teams never put out their strongest team for this huge lump of metal in which the captain who holds it in the match winning photo is nearly crying in pain because his hand has been fractured in 700 places! I think that the ONLY reason that they put this "Competition" out is to raise dosh for charity, which I agree is a good idea, but, I think that the teams who put out a second rate team are cheating the system, they put a crappy team out, the fans don't want to go because of it, thus resulting in less revenue for the charities. What has the footbaling world come to? I propose that the Winner of 3rd Div, 2nd Div, 1st Div, Prem, FA Cup, League Cup, LDV Vans, and the fair play award al go into a hat and make a decent competition out of it, getting more cash for charities and encourageing fan support more. The lower division clubs would have a field day if they beat a higher division winner! The Fa must bring the spirit back in to cups like this, expand, encourage and Emphise (The 3 E's) The Charity shield to sum it up needs to be revamped.

- 08/03/01 Although you would encourage fans of the smaller team to go to the game in the new format you suggest, most Premiership teams have enough meaningless fixtures without playing a thrid division outfit pre-season. |
