Advantages: Added Rivalry , Pride at stake
Disadvantages: Game not played at full pace
Tomorrow sees the offical curtain raiser for the forthcoming premiership season, with Liverpool versus Manchester United. It should be an interesting game to say the least, with the added spice of the history of rivalry between the two teams. I shall be watching the game purely as a football fan tomorrow as I'm not really a fan of either side. I will however be supporting the Red of Merseyside more, as I'm interested to see if anyone can stop Man U this season. Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool, Leeds have all been active in the transfer market this summer to try and catch Man U - and have made some excellent signings. Then Man U buy 2 world class players to add to their current squad - it makes you wonder who will stop them this year. Anyway - back to the game.... We know the charity shield is no longer what it used to be - more of a pre season friendly some seasons, but tomorrow's game will be a battle of pride as well as football. It will be tight - neither side wanting to give too much away. If Liverpool play with Heskey and Owen up front, and Litmanen in behind, they have the fire power to open up the Man U back line. However, with the likes of newboys Veron and Van Nistelroy along with the regular stalwarts of Beckham, Scholes, Giggs, etc. it should provide an entertaining attacking game. My thoughts on the result? Well... My heart leads to a 2-0 win for Liverpool with a trademark Owen finish and a ripper from Gerrard. However... My head rules that Man U will be too strong for Liverpool and for the rest of the teams in the league again this year. They will run out 3-1 winners with goals from Van Nistelroy, Scholes and a familiar Beckham free kick. A Fowler penalty seems to be no consolation. Please prove me wrong Scouse Lads...
