Advantages: we beat Man U
Disadvantages: -
With the weather really gloomy and only TV to watch, it was a rare time all the family sat down to watch the charity shield, in store was an epic game against Liverpool and United. Being die hard Liverpool fans it would be a brilliant day if Liverpool could win against United. We had done the double over United last year for the first time in a long time, so there was no fear. It was a dream start for Liverpool a quick break into the box where Owen passed to Murphy and it looked like the danger had gone until Keane made a rash challenge and the referee pointed to the spot. Gary McAllister scored to give Liverpool the lead inside two minutes. It was a dream start and when Owen scored an excellent goal as he capitalised on Stamp’s error it was 2-0 inside twenty minutes. Of course we expected United to press Liverpool and if it wasn’t for Sander Westerveld making a coupling of excellent saves and the cross bar saving Liverpool it could have been 2-0. But, it wasn’t and Liverpool went in at half time 2-0. The second half United played better and at first I thought Liverpool were as sleep and I think the van Nistlerooy goal really woke them. Despite, some late pressure Liverpool held on and won the Charity shield. It was another great day and to watch Alex Ferguson sent home empty handed was excellent. I can still remember the painful memories of the 1996 FA Cup Final when Cantona scored so this was a bit of a revenge. It was a good game and a good spectacle for neutrals what it showed was the Liverpool are getting closer and will get close to United. Van Nistlerooy looks a good buy but I do feel sorry for Andy Cole who was left out of the side today. From a Liverpool fan point of view I was upset that neither Fowler or Redknapp figured in the game and I wonder what was the reason behind Fowler being left out even from the bench. I also have to add and I don’t know whether anyone agrees with me but having wa
tched the game on Sky I thought Andy Gray so badly wanted United, on several occasions he shouted penalty when the decision was 50-50. It was a bit infuriating to watch maybe because Andy Gray is an Everton fan and can’t forgive Liverpool for winning the game in injury time last season. The game was good there was no charity shown and one thing it shows is that the Premiership will be hotly contested. I think United will still be the team to beat but hopefully there will be other teams in the title race and Liverpool will be one of them.
