Advantages: The season starts in style

Disadvantages: Sir Alex Ferguson never has his players at 100%, Often the match isn't as good as is hoped

The annual curtain raiser of the English League is the Charity Shield. Winners of the previous year's Premiership play the winners of the previous year's FA Cup. If the winners of the Premiership have also won the FA Cup, then the runners-up in the FA Cup will play. Manchester United, the League winners, and Liverpool, who had been victorious in their FA Cup quest, participated this year’s event in. The Charity Shield normally takes place in Wembley, but as it is being demolished, this year’s event took place in the Millennium Stadium, in Cardiff.
The match was played last Sunday. The match was played at a frantic pace, and although it was the first competitive domestic match of the season for these two teams, the effort and commitment was first-class. Tackles were flying in, and although the Charity Shield isn’t a major trophy, both teams wanted to beat the other as their rivalries between these two teams are huge.
Liverpool won the match 2-1. A Gary McAllister penalty as early as the 2nd minute and then a Michael Owen strike 15 minutes later gave the Scousers a 2-0 half-time lead, although United were denied an obvious penalty, a Liverpool defender hand-balling inside the box. In the second period, United piled forward, and were rewarded with Ruud Van Neistelrooy’s first goal for United. United set up camp in the Liverpool half after that, but couldn’t score. Westerveld performed heroics in goals, and United were also denied a second obvious penalty.
Overall, the Charity Shield proved another success with another great match. So let’s all hope that the Charity Shield keeps going for years to come!

The Charity Shield was the highlight of Chelsea's season last year, so performances are too soon to be judged. Ruud van Niestlrooy looked good in the game, but it is not a real indicator of how teams will fare.
