Advantages: Goo indication of new players and team form

Disadvantages: Another meaningless match in the long season

Some people say that the charity shield dosen't mean anything, and in some ways I can agree that you only get a little cup, and the winners no points or a bye into the FA cup, so some clubs don't take it too seriously.Manchester United and Chelsea, both had good sides out but not their strongest. However the match can be a good indication. The way Hassilebaink went through the United defence, showed United may be in for a harder season than before. And then theres Roy Keane's tackle on Gus Poyet. It showed he is still the hard tackler and vicious player, despite winning all th PFA and writers player of the year last season. Overall I have a mixed opinion of the Charity Shield. It has it's moments and is a good curtian opener at the start of the season so I feel that it should be kept.

Man Utd have lost the last three Charity Shields but during the ensuing season they've swept everybody away winning the treble and last season the league by 18 points. Beating Man Utd in the Charity Shield just seems to annoy them a bit and then they take it out on everybody else when the season starts! I do however think that Chelsea will do better now they've bought a decent striker and offloaded that waste of space Sutton! Even though I'm a Man Utd fan I would like a closer race for the title.
