Advantages: Gives us something to dream about

Disadvantages: It soon turns into a nightmare

As a QPR fan, I used to really look forward to the FA Cup when we were in the perm (that's the first time I've ever typed those deadly words...soon it will be 'when we were playing professional football). As I went to school next door to Griffin Road, it was great fun listening to Brentford fans moaning about going out in round two to Hayes Town or whoever.

We even did vaguely well sometimes, although unfortunately the nearest we came to winning was when we lost in the final to Tottenham, in 1982 when I was 18 months old. But for QPR, we usually did OK.

Then disaster struck, the man in black decided to give Man Utd nine minutes extra time in the second half, when they were one nil down. We had to win to stand any chance of staying in our rightful place and sending Coventry down to Div. one, where they obviously want to be, they try so hard to get there each season. But no, the ref. decided to let the game go on till Utd equalised...and they did.

And that was that, while all my sensible friends enjoyed watching Chelsea's foreign legion, or Fulham, who were at least dominating their league, even if it was Div. 3 back then, I sat in the rain watching QPR lose to teams who only brought 100 supporters with them to away games.

But the cup...well that was our chance, wasn't it...we might play against Chelsea, who we hate so passionately, but who don't even realise we're alive.

I was even able to watch a goal I had seen scored by Trev up for goal of the month on Match of the Day. That cold January day when QPR supporters were rewarded for their patience and stupidity with a marvellous overhead bicycle kick goal from 20 yards out by the one and only Trevor Sinclear. And it got better; he even won goal of the season.

By that time of cause, QPR were out, beaten 2:1 by Wimbledon in the fifth round. That was the season they went on an unbeaten run of about 18 games, and had knocke
d out Man Utd in the previous round, we didn't stand a chance.

The cup has been one light to cheer up our dreary existence. In the league we're not even humorously bad, we're at the bottom because of 0:0 and 1:1 draws, not bloopers and own goals. At least then we could have a laugh about it. Fortunately, our defeat by the Gunners in the fourth round gave as our laugh for this season.

Our league future is looking ever bleaker, relying on a 7 foot striker to keep us up...unfortunately he can't head the ball, which rather spoils his promising physical advantage.

So what can we look forward to, the cup again of course, and next year, we will be in it from the earlier rounds, like my friends of old down the road in Brentford. Thank the Gods of football it exists, or I really would stop supporting the SuperHoops...honestly I would.

My commiserations on the 9 mins extra time costing you your place in the league. Good op.

Oh, dear. I have read this op too late! Division 2 has become the future ( short-term, at least!0

Still, the atmosphere at non-division grounds is usually quite good, so the future looks a bit brighter...!

A vu for a well written and enjoyable opinion, from you guessed it a Chelsea fan.
