Advantages: I had fun
Disadvantages: None
Toys from my childhood.
I was born in 1954. In those days children did not have as children who have been born in later years. I lived in a small village and most of my fun was had playing outside climbing trees, fording brooks. I did not have a sand pit, but remember playing in the dirt with a trowel.
I did have a few toys though those I remember are:
Dolls pram
~~~~~~~~~~~~ .
My dolls pram was a huge old coach built one. I think it was second hand , one of my cousin's first I think .I was not ever so keen on playing with dolls so I used to load it up with hay and put my rabbit in it and push her around the village. I did have a doll or two but I was not keen on playing with them much they just sat on my bed.
Dolls Tea set
~~~~~~~~~~
I did have a toy tea set to give my dolls tea. I don't remember playing with it and the dolls though. I but preferred to make dinner plates for the fairies out of large leaves with acorn cups for drinking out of ,and using berries and flowers as pretend food.
Toy sweetshop
~~~~~~~~~~~
I do remember having a toy sweetshop one Christmas, this was fun for a little while but I preferred to be playing outside in the garden.
Plastercine
~~~~~~~~~
I do remember enjoying playing with Plastercine making all sorts of models and pretend foods, but I preferred to be outside helping dad make things.
Swing
~~~~~~
Swinging me loved swinging on the swing my dad made me. I spent hours on it also swinging across the brooks on a string tied to the tree.
Stilts
~~~~~
A toy that I remember with much affection was the stilts my dad made for me they were my legs I pretended to be a Martian.
Wendy house
~~~~~
My dad also made me my own Wendy house in the garden. It was a garden shed with windows. It had a telephone in it so mum could tell me when it was time to go in for dinner. I spent hours in there playing it was my den, I held a secret clubs there, you could not get in without a password
I also had a den on the village green, my own special camp a hiding place in the bushes made a smashing camp.
Spirograph
~~~~~~~~~
One year for Christmas my Dad gave me a sort of Spiro graph, he made it out of an old gramophone player I really enjoyed playing and making patterns with that.
I remember playing Ludo and Snakes and ladders at my Grans and she had a fantastic marble solitaire set too.
I had a happy childhood, playing with my animals we kept chickens too I would often be found in the hen coop playing with them. I played for hours on the village green with bats and ball, made many dens, climbed trees, ran free.
I spent lots of time helping Dad make and create things. Loved helping Mum bake.
Not many toys but I was not impoverished in the play things I had. Of course I had more toys than mentioned but I can't remember them.
Summary: I did noyt have many bought toys
